Golf in Dubai Championship
Venue: Jumeirah Golf Estates – Fire Course, Dubai, UAE.
Dates: Tuesday 1st – Saturday 5th December 2020
The European Tour is drawing to a close in 2020 with plenty of the biggest names on the circuit looking for a boost in their ranking and prize money for the campaign. Dubai is a golfing hotbed during the European winter and with over $1 million in the prize fund, it promises to be a fascinating weekend of golf. The event is the penultimate on offering on the European Tour this season, with the DP Dubai Championship due to be played at the same venue next week to culminate the year. AS a new event on the tour for the COVID 19 hit year of 2020, it could throw up surprise and quality golf in equal measure.
Plenty of the biggest names on the European Tour are present in Dubai meaning it should be a hotly contested week of golf:-
Austrian Bernd Wiesberger has been a figure of consistency on the European Tour for the past few years and he looks well set to challenge in Dubai over the next fortnight.
Young Scot Robert MacIntyre continues to make a real splash on the European Tour, and he looks to have a very bright future ahead of him.
Englishman Matt Wallace has become one of Europe’s most consistent players and with a Ryder Cup place to aim for next term, he could have the bit between his teeth here in Dubai.
Englishman Andy Sullivan has won twice on the European Tour this season and he tends to enjoy the warmer climes and could be well placed to make it 3 tournament wins this campaign.
Sam Horsfield has been pushing hard on the European Tour all season and he will be looking to add to his couple of wins this term, here at a course that should suit his game well.
1st Round Leader
Producing the goods over 72 holes is often the most difficult thing for any golfer to do therefore here are our first round leader picks:-
Belgian former Ryder Cup player Thomas Pieters has been much improved throughout 2020 and he could get off to a flyer here in conditions that are sure to suit his long game.
Following an excellent campaign that has seen him emerge on the PGA Tour, Tom Lewis could take some stopping here in Dubai this week.
Englishman Jordan Smith looked in good form all season, and he will be keen to build on that from the off here.
Top Ten Finish
With so many quality players assembled here in Dubai, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 10 come Sunday:-
Despite not managing to make it into the winners enclosure for a while, Martin Kaymer has enjoyed a very good year in 2020 and he should be in amongst it here in Dubai this week.
Former Masters champion Danny Willett is a man that plays patchy golf, but his game is always suited to harder, faster conditions and he could feature come Sunday here in Dubai.
Emerging Chinese player Haotong Li is forging a strong reputation on both the European and PGA Tours and he will be keen to continue to build on his promise here.
