Horse Race Betting: Sun Met

Legal Eagle

Current “Horse of the Year”; Legal Eagle is in peak form. But his record over further than 1600m since winning the 2000m Derby Trial in 2015 reads: first in the 2450m SA Derby, first in the Jubilee (1800m), fifth in the 2015 Durban July (2200m), second in a 1800m Allowance Plate (following a layoff), second in the 2016 Met (giving Smart Call 2.5kg), first in the 2016 Champions Challenge (2000m), second in the 2017 Met (giving Whisky Baron 2.5kg) and second in the Champions Challenge (giving Deo Juvente 1kg).

“You don’t have to be Einstein to figure out his record over 1600m is unblemished. But his record over further is not far off. Yes, he is vulnerable over 2000m, but that’s fine. We can’t come into the Met overconfident but we will be there.” says trainer Sean Tarry.

Oh Susanna

A leggy filly out of the impressive stallion Street Cry. The fairer sex have a good record in this race and the Snaith yard are in fine form of late which makes Oh Susanna a perfect candidate for gold. Perhaps quite a feat to land the Met with a 3yr old filly, but stranger things have happened.

Last Winter

Khaya Stables’ four-year-old Last Winter lost his unbeaten tag when only pipped by outsider Milton in the Premier Trophy in December 2017. A strong contender and one part of the pair of trainer Dean Kannemeyer who said that “One needs an element of good fortune in these final weeks. But we are on track for now.”

Current Betting odds: 15/2

Winner of the 2017 Durban July, Marinaresco was named the “little horse that could.” Marinaresco closed the 2016/17 season with another tilt at the Gr1 Champion Cup, but the double was not to be and he finished towards the back of the field, although I don’t think anyone minded too much. Since his Durban campaign, he’s had a good rest at Soetendal spelling farm outside Wellington and has recently re-joined the Bass yard for his Cape summer campaign. A promising contender and firm favourite for this years Sun Met.

Wild Card Pick
Cascapeda: Delpech is riding at the top of his game this season and Cascapeda has impressed on the Highveld, reeling off a hattrick last time out. This is an excellent combination and although this is a much sterner course, they may just have what it takes.

Current betting odds of 10/1

The Sun Met Horse Race Betting Tips

Before you place any bets, it would be useful to take note of the below betting tips:

1. Do your Research

The horses that are racing at The Sun Met in 2018 have a long history of racing in tournaments over the last few years. By understanding how they performed in each race, will allow you to have a better understanding of their expected performance. For example one of The Sun Met’s favourites, Marinaresco, has worn blinkers for most of his races, these didn’t work for him in the 2016 Durban July but will what has been decided for the Sun Met and how will this affect his race?

2. Do your homework on the value of a bet

Professional horse racing punters always look for the “value” in a bet. This is when their idea of the probability for a horse winning is bigger than the bookmaker’s price indicates. If for example they think a horse has a 40% chance (15/10) of winning and the horse is priced up at 2/1 (33%), they have a decent betting opportunity. Therefore merely betting on your favorite horse is a risky decision as it may not pay off. It’s important to assess which bets will give you the most value, so do your homework.

3. Don’t bet too big too early

It’s important for Sun Met betting enthusiasts to manage their betting strategy and system to ensure that they don’t bet too big too early on. What does this mean? It means that if you place all your eggs in one basket too early on in the day, you may miss out on opportunities later in the day as your betting budget has already been exhausted. Divide your budget and time on opportunities throughout the day to ensure maximum coverage. This betting tip has helped many to win big at the Sun Met.

4. Have consistent betting systems

Serious horse racing punters are consistent in what they play. They don’t miss a place accumulator because three in a row have lost and they don’t increase their bet if they had a good win the day before. The best Sun Meet betting punters find a system that works and they stick to it.

5. Manage your betting budget

All successful Sun Met bettors know that you need to have a Sun Met betting budget and stick to it. This is true especially if you have a good win. Sticking to your Sun Met betting budget allows you to plan your betting budget responsibly and ensures you don’t bet money that you don’t have to bet with. Responsible Sun Met betting is paramount when it comes to your betting budget.

6. Assess the going of the event before you bet

The going is the ground that horses will race on. Most horses will be influenced by the surface that they race on, is it muddy and soft or is it dry and firm? If a horse wins one or more races on soft or heavy going, you can presume with good reason that such ground is suited to his racing style. Unless the horse has run poorly on firm going, there is no conclusive evidence that firm going might not suit the horse even better. Therefore pay careful attention to the going at Kenilworth racecourse just before the event before placing a bet.
