Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to improve his Manchester United squad in a number of ways this summer, but it could be argued that no position is in bigger need of an upgrade that center-half.

Chris Smalling appears serviceable as one of the central defensive pillars at United, but the club has run through numerous other options without much success at this point.

Solskjaer will have seen how the signing of Virgil van Dijk vaulted Liverpool into instant title contenders. He first wanted can Dijk’s international teammate Matthijs De Ligt, but it looks like now his sights are set elsewhere.

United are reported to be ready to launch a world record bid for a defender, setting aside £84 million for Napoli’s Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

Napoli, though, may want closer to £100 million for the ace and it should be noted that there is a £133 million release clause in his contract that activates in the summer of 2020.

United are 21.00 fourth favourites to win the title with BetXChange before they begin their summer turnover and they are 0.90 fourth favourites to secure a Top 4 finish.
