His recent form in New York hasn’t been great as he hasn’t made it to the semi-finals in the past three years. Rafael Nadal will certainly be another contender, but his style isn’t as well suited to the hard courts as his main rivals. Women’s
The romantic fans will have one clear winner in mind when it comes to the women’s half of the draw, and that is Serena Williams. She is still chasing the record for the most Grand Slam victories, and that is beginning to have an impact on her performance. She was burdened with the pressure in the Wimbledon final, and she was swatted aside by Simona Halep inside an hour. However, the US Open is in her home city, and a win here to tie the record 20 years after her first success here would be the stuff of fairy tales. It’s incredibly difficult to look past this, but there are more than enough contenders in the women’s half of the draw.
Halep will be looking for her third-ever Grand Slam title, and her second consecutive success after shocking Williams at Wimbledon, and the Romanian will head into the competition as the number one seed. Ashleigh Barty will also be a contender despite crashing out at the quarter-finals at Wimbledon despite being the heavy favourite. The number two seed has already tasted Grand Slam glory this season and will likely be a contender in the second week. Last season’s US Open champion Naomi Osaka will also be one of the front runners after a disappointing Wimbledon. It has been a mesmerising rise over the past 12 months for the Japanese player after winning at Flushing Meadows last year, before winning the first Grand Slam of the year in Australia. She was victorious over Williams last year, and while she may make it to the final again, it would be incredibly tricky to bet on her to beat Williams in consecutive US Open finals.
