Being held in New York from 29 August to 11 September, the fourth and final annual Grand Slam tournament pushes players at the end of the season to pull out all the stops for the elusive hardware.

US Tennis Open

Below are some of this year’s top contenders who will be bringing the fight to the hard court this year.

US Open Tennis Betting Predictions

The betting predictions of who will win the US Open are hotting up and only a few more matches are left to be played.

Semi-Finals Mens

9th September: Stan Wawrinka (Betting odds of 1/1) plays Kei Nishkori (Betting odds of 8/10) in the first semi final. In a suprise upset, Nishkori beat Any Murray in the quarter-finals. Murray led by two sets to one but eventually lost 1-6 6-4 4-6 6-1 7-5 in three hours 57 minutes.

9th September: Novak Djokovic (Betting odds of 1/7) takes on Gael Monfils (Betting odds of 5/1) in his 10th consecutive US Open semi-final. With a recent wrist injury, Djokovic hasn’t spent a huge amount of time on court and we’re yet to see if his wrist can stand up to the rigours of a grand slam. To win the US Open, Djokovic will need to win 14 sets, which is only a few more than is required to win a Masters event, and 50% less than is normally needed to win a major. Many experts however say that the extra rest was a factor in him beating Murray and all his other exhausted opponents. Only time will tell whether this will work to his advantage.

Previous Men’s US Open Betting Predictions

Before the US Open started, these were our predictions and reviews on some of the top players:

Marin Cilic (Out of the US Open)

This 27-year-old Croatian has won 23 of the 37 games played this year with a ranking of 12th worldwide. He has won 14 ATP titles in his 11-year career with a ranking high of 8th for men’s singles tennis in 2014. His position was elevated following his win at the Tennis US Open that same year, an achievement he will undoubtedly look to repeat with the upcoming 2016 edition. He will also be hoping to prove himself following his shock loss to world number 144, Marco Trungelliti, at this year’s Roland Garros, as well as being knocked out of the Wimbledon quarter-finals by Roger Federer. However, Cilic with his strong serve and pinpoint groundstrokes, put up a good fight against the Swiss dynamo and would certainly have taken away a lot from this contest.
A winner both on and off the court, his recently launched Marin Cilic Foundation aims to provide educational opportunities and medical assistance for youth in Croatia.

Rafael Nadal (Out of the US Open)

The left-handed Spaniard with 69 titles to his name has, in recent years, had to contend with several injuries. The 30-year-old was forced to miss this year’s Wimbledon in order to rest his wrist tendon – damaged during Roland Garros – so as to compete in the Olympic Games. Having missed out on the London Olympics because of another tendinitis issue, Nadal is keen to win another Olympic gold. Increased injuries have been linked to the hectic tennis schedules with age also coming in as a factor, but this won’t stop Nadal going for his third US Open Tennis win. He comes with incredible speed, a top-spin to contend with and impressive mental toughness.

Novak Djokovic (In to semi-finals)

You can’t begin discussing tennis these days without serving up the name Novak Djokovic. In his career, Djokovic has only lost 150 matches and won an impressive 732, placing him as a top contender to take the 2016 Tennis US Open. Currently number one in the world, the Serbian has already made history this year, becoming the eighth player ever to achieve a Career Grand Slam by winning all four majors in a career. With his 2016 French Open win, he became the third man to hold all four major titles at once. His shock third-round Wimbledon 2016 exit after losing to Sam Querrey was a huge hit because it cost him the chance to become only the second player in history to win all four grand slam titles in one calendar year, after Rod Laver. The demands of the ATP tour may have caused fatigue, but this loss will only spur Djokovic on even more to perform at the 2016 US Open.

Andy Murray (Out of the US Open)

Andy Murray has once again become a favourite in the heart of Britons after winning Wimbledon for a second time in his career. The Number 2 ranked men’s single’s tennis player has been under severe pressure for most of his 11-year career, with relentless analyses of his mental and physical strengths and Wimbledon always just out of reach. However, his 2013 Wimbledon win – which ended Britain’s 77-year Wimbledon drought- showed the 29-year-old Scot has what it takes to take home the trophy and has freed him up to overcome new hurdles without the proverbial monkey on his back. Murray will certainly be riding this winning wave going forward with his sights set on the 2016 Tennis US Open, a title he already earned in 2012. With a drastically improved serve, ability to read opponent’s weaknesses and emotions in check following this win, Murray is certainly a tough contender in 2016.

Stan Wawrinka (In to semi-finals)

With his career on the up, having won the 2014 Australian Open and 2015 French Open, Wawrinka will certainly be looking to prove himself on the hard court after being knocked out in the second round of Wimbledon 2016. With his newfound rival, Andy Murray, having taken the Wimbledon title this year, Wawrinka will have even more reason to fight for top spot at this year’s US Open. The Swiss player, who is currently ranked number 5 in the world, will also want to oust his national counterpart, Roger Federer, a name that has dominated the tennis courts throughout Wawrinka’s 11-year career. This physically strong athlete has a powerful serve, percussive forehand and one-handed backhand that gives him the edge over more inexperienced players.
