Sevens Rugby Preview

Las Vegas Sevens Preview – (1-3 March 2019)

USA – have been in sensational form of late with their best-ever start to a campaign reaching all for finals in Dubia, Cape Town, Hamilton and Sydney. Rugby’s “sleeping giants” are the defending champions of the Las Vegas Sevens and will be one of the favourites to take home the title this year.  Carlin Isles will be one of their attacking weapons and is currently in 2nd place with 18 tries for the season.

New Zealand have been resurgent in 2019 winning tournaments in Dubai and Sydney, resulting in them leading the overall standings. Historically they have a good record at the USA leg of the Sevens Series making the final 5 times in the past 8 years. New Zealand are in Pool A and should easily top their group to move on to the quarter finals.

Alasio Sovita Naduva from New Zealand is the leading try scorer with 20 tries in 4 tournaments

Fiji are starting to reach their best form in this years tournament and when they are on song, look unbeatable. Two tournament victories in the Cape Town and Hamilton leg have them sitting in 3rd place in the overall standings.  Fiji always perform well in USA tournament with wins in 2015 and 2016, a second place finish in 2017, and third place in 2018. Currently they are ranked 1st in terms of points scored (706) this season, so if they can tighten up their defense they will have a chance to go all the way.

South Africa, currently fourth on the overall standings, have had a poor start to the season, with their best result a third placed finish in Cape Town.  The Blitzbokke last won the Las Vegas tournament in 2017, beating Fiji 19-12 final while last year they crashed out in the semi finals. The Blitzbokke should  top their pool with the only real challenge in the form of England.

South Africa captain Philip Snyman added: “We definitely have not had the best of starts this season, but I think the more our team play together and the more time they spend together the guys will gel.”

World Sevens Rugby Betting

The World Sevens Series have been dominated by 3 sides over the years and this year should be no different.

South Africa: The defending World Sevens Series Champions of 2018 will be looking to keep up their winning ways and take the World Sevens Series title for the 4th time.  The Blitz Bokke had a remarkable season last year as they only won 2 tournaments but finished in the top four at all of the tournaments. This consistency is what ultimately gave them the World Series title.  The team, coached by Neil Powell, have some superstars across the park with rising star Muller Du Plessis one to look out for. Key to their success will be if senior players, such as Koch, Snyman and Brown can remain injury free and if they can find the rhythm and synergy of last season.

Fiji: Fiji have won the series in 2015 and 2016. Last year under their new coach, Gareth Baber, they came in second place just losing the overall title to South Africa by 2 points.  This year they will be looking to go one better and will be one of the favourites for this year’s title thanks to their exceptional talent and skills.

New Zealand: The most successful team of all time on the HSBC World Sevens Series is New Zealand, having won an impressive 12 titles over the past 18 years. New Zealand last won the title in the 2013-2014 season and finished in 3rd place last season. They reached 2 finals last year and won the Cape Town tournament. If they can get off to a good start this year they will be one of the favourites to take home the title.

Betting odds for winning the series are:

Team Odds
South Africa 28/10
Fiji 22/10
New Zealand 5/2
England 7/1
Australia 10/1

Cape Town Sevens Preview – (07-09 December 2018)

South Africa, the defending series champions, will be favourites heading into their home leg tournament in Cape Town. The Blitzboks contested 2 of the last 3 finals, last winning the tournament in 2015. Last year they got knocked out by eventual champions New Zealand in the semi finals. They are in group B with defending champions New Zealand.

Muller du Plessis was the standout player for the Blitzboks in Dubai ending the weekend as the leading scorer in the World Series Sevens so far.

Fiji, the Olympic champions, are always contenders at any tournament. They also did not have a great opening tournament losing out in the quarter finals and then beating South Africa for 5th Place. They will be looking to get their first series win this season – they last won the South African leg of the sevens tournament in 2005.

New Zealand had a poor series last year but started the series with a victory in Dubai last week. The team looked on form and in control the whole tournament in Dubai and will be one of the favourites going into this weekend.  They are the defending champions at the Cape Town sevens having beaten Argentina 38-14 last year.

The All Blacks boast an impressive Sevens record in the country having won 10 of the 19 tournaments to date and are the defending champions heading into the weekend.

England finished in third place in Dubai and looked good for most of the tournament before losing to eventual champions, New Zealand. They will be a threat at this years tournament and have tasted victory in Cape Town before, winning the tournament in 2016.

  • Pools
  • Hamilton Sevens Preview – (3-4 February 2018)
  • South Africa, currently on top of the overall standings, have had a good start to the season, being crowned champions in Dubai, finishing third in Cape Town and second in Sydney, Australia. The Blitzbokke are the defending champions in New Zealand, having beaten Fiji 26-5 in last year’s final. The team is will be without captain Philip Snyman and Ruhan Nel who are ruled out with injuries. Kyle Brown will take over as captain and in all likelyhood the Blitzbokke will cruise through the pool stages and be favourites to defend their title.
  • THE SOUTH AFRICAN TEAM ARRIVED IN HAMILTON ON MONDAY. THEY FACE PAPUA NEW GUINEA, RUSSIA AND ENGLAND IN POOL B OF THE TOURNAMENT THAT STARTS ON SATURDAY AT THE FMG WAIKATO STADIUM
  • Fiji have had a poor start to the season by their standards finishing fourth in Dubai and fifth in Cape Town and losing to the USA in the quarter finals in Sydney. The dynamic team have suffered from ill discipline in a few games, receiving yellow cards at vital moments and will need to improve this to claim the victory. Fiji reached the final last year, and last won the New Zealand tournament in 2010.
  • New Zealand have had a superb start to the 2018 season reaching the final in Dubai and then claiming their first title since April 2016 with a win in Cape Town. They are no stranger to victory in the New Zealand leg of the series, winning the title 5 times over the past 7 years. They last won the Tournament in 2016.
  • THE NEW ZEALAND SEVENS MEN’S TEAM WILL WANT TO IMPRESS AFTER SUNDAY’S QUARTER-FINAL LOSS TO AUSTRALIA, 24-12, AT THE SYDNEY TOURNAMENT.
  • England started this year’s World Series in good form finishing 3rd in Dubai but finished a disappointing seventh in Cape Town. Currently sitting 6th on the overall standings, England last won the New Zealand Tournament in 2013 and made the final in 2015.
  • Sydney Sevens Preview – (26–28 January 2018)
  • After being crowned champions in Dubai South Africa fell a bit short in Cape Town finishing in 3rd place.  Historically the Blitzbokke have won the Australian leg of the series on 3 occasions and are the defending Champions from last year’s tournament. Currently they sit in second place on the overall standings. A real threat for claiming the title again.
  • “WE LOOKED BACK AT WHAT WENT WRONG IN CAPE TOWN AND IT SEEMED TO BE A MENTAL THING,” SAID POWELL.
  • Fiji have had a poor start to the season by their standards finishing fourth in Dubai and fifth in Cape Town. The dynamic team have suffered from ill discipline in a few games, receiving yellow cards at vital moments and will need to improve this in order to claim the victory.  Australia is a happy hunting ground for Fiji winning the title in 2012, 2013 and 2015.
  • New Zealand have had a superb start to the 2018 season reaching the final in Dubai and then claiming their first title since April 2016 with a win in Cape Town and this fantastic start has them currently sitting on top of the standings.  They are no stranger to victory in the Australian leg of the series reaching  5 of 7 finals since 2011 and winning 3 of them. They last won the Sydney Tournament in 2016.
  • A SUPERB MIX OF YOUTH AND EXPERIENCE, THE KIWIS REPRESENT THE BEST VALUE TO TAKE THE SYDNEY CROWN.
  • England started this year’s World Series in good form finishing 3rd in Dubai but finished a disappointing seventh in Cape Town. Currently sitting 4th on the overall standings, the runners up in last year’s tournament will be hoping to go one better with a maiden title at the Sydney Sevens.
  • Hong Kong Sevens Preview – (6-8 April 2018)

The 42nd Hong Kong Sevens will be played on April 6, 7, and 8. One of the most prestigious sevens tournaments was started in 1976. This year it will host 40-sides of women and men and attract a crowd of over 120,000.

South Africa, currently on top of the overall standings, have had a consistent Sevens series. With one tournament victory, two runners up and two 3rd place finishes.  The Blitzbokke finished second in last years tournament losing 22-0 to Fiji in the final. South Africa have never won the Hong Kong tournament despite reaching the final on four occasions.  The Blitzbokke should comfortably top their pool stages with the only real challenge in the form of England.

Fiji are chasing a fourth consecutive victory in the Hong Kong Sevens over the weekend, a win that could see them overtake South Africa on the HSBC World Sevens series ladder.

Fiji arrive at the tournament with two tournament championships (Hamilton, Vancouver) and are within 8 points of series leader, South Africa.  The dynamic team is gaining momentum and have a fantastic record at the Hong Kong Tournament winning 5 titles in their last 6 tournaments. A real favourite to lift the trophy again.

New Zealand have been resurgent in 2018 reaching the final in Dubai and then claiming their first title since April 2016 with a win in Cape Town. Historically they have a good record at the Hong Kong leg of the Sevens Series making the final 22 times with 11 victories. They last won the Tournament in 2014.

Since Samoa’s victory in 2010, all subsequent Cup victories have come from Fiji and New Zealand.

Australia – have been in decent form of late and won their home leg of the Sevens Series in Sydney. Currently they are ranked 3rd in terms of points scored this season, so if they can tighten up their defense they will have a chance to go all the way.
