History

This season’s SA20 has been a wild ride. Every time you think you understand the teams and their relative strengths, another upset happens that shifts the balance of power.

That was the case again on Friday, when bottom of the log MI Cape Town knocked off the joint top squad in Sunrisers Eastern Cape. It was a low-scoring game, but MICT used the home-field advantage at Newlands to win by three wickets, with the final runs coming in the last over.

The result of that match didn’t change the positions of the Pretoria Capitals and Joburg Super Kings, who head into the weekend in third and fourth on the log, respectively.

What it did do was put a little pressure on the Super Kings. The Johannesburg franchise has two matches remaining and, with 17 points, is three points ahead of both the Super Giants and MICT.

Odds are that they can no longer backdoor their way into the playoffs, as one of those two sides would knock the Super Kings out if Jiobrg were to lose both remaining matches. Their last game is against the Paarl Royals, who will likely need a win to secure top spot on the log.

The Pretoria Capitals are in a strange spot. A win here would put them on 24 points, tied with Sunrisers Eastern Cape and the Royals. They also have the NRR edge over Paarl. Finishing in the top two is huge, as it avoids the Eliminator round, but this is the Capitals’ final game, and the two above them have matches in hand. All Pretoria can do is win and hope the pressure allows them to sneak into second place.

Joburg Super Kings

The Super Kings started the season hot, but they have fallen apart down the stretch. They were top of the log after winning their first three games, sitting pretty on 13 points. They have added just four points since then, both from matches abandoned due to rain.

The Super Kings did beat the Capitals in Match 2 of the season. It was a big win at Centurion, a ground that the Super Kings have historically found it tough to win at. They won by 22 runs after setting a total of 169 for Pretoria to win. This came on the back of a strong 48 from 33 balls from Rilee Rossouw and outstanding bowling figures of 4-for-23 from Duan Jansen.

Pretoria Capitals

The Capitals have locked up a playoff spot, but this is a squad that is looking for momentum heading into those finals.

Their season has been a mirror image of the Super King. They won just one of their first five matches and were second bottom of the log heading into Round 6. They have since won three of four, though they did suffer a defeat last time out against the Paarl Royals at Centurion.

A win would be a huge confidence boost, with a likely Eliminator match on January 22.

Best Bets

Can the Super Kings raise their level?

It is now or never for this side, and I think they will do enough to win here and secure a playoff spot.
