The milestone 100th PGA Championship tees off on Thursday, 9 August at St. Louis, Missouri, with some of the top-ranked global golfers taking to the course. Here are five of the top contenders for this major.

5 Players to bet on at the PGA Championship

  1. Jordan Spieth

The 25-year-old superstar took his first major at the 2015 Masters Tournament, followed closely by the 2015 US Open win, with his third major’s title clinched at the 2017 Open Championship. While his final round at Carnoustie was not great, and he’s gone more than a year without a win, this is not typical Spieth performance. He’s got the drive to pursue his career Grand Slam and it’s never worth overlooking one of Time Magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People’.

  1. Dustin Johnson

The current World No. 1 golfer certainly makes the top 5 with great potential to take the PGA Championship in 2018. He is on a par with Ernie Els, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Hubert Green and Doug Ford at 19 PGA Tour victories, and has one major – the 2016 US Open – under his belt. Johnson has the world’s longest drive, has five World Golf Championship victories, and is the first player to have won each of the four World Golf Championship events. Keep your eye on DJ.

  1. Rory McIlroy

With his first European Tour win in 2009, and the youngest player to reach the €10 million in career earnings, McIlroy has got game. His recent performance at Carnoustie, where he finished runner-up, was notable, and he’s managed to finish in the top 10 the last eight competitions. While he has four career majors, his last one was the 2014 PGA Championship, so either he’s in somewhat of a rut or he’s just about to clinch another major!

  1. Tiger Woods

His name has been bandied about of late and his recent performance at the Open – T-6 – shows he’s creeping back into the top 5 spot. Even with his golfing slump the past few years, Wood’s golfing record is impressive. He has 79 official PGA Tour event wins, 14 majors – including a Career Grand Slam – and is the only player ever to have won all four majors in a row, aptly called the ‘Tiger Slam’. While he showed some shakiness under pressure – very un-Tiger-like – the 11-time PGA Player of the Year certainly has another win in him.

  1. Justin Thomas

After turning pro in 2014, JT has made a massive impact on the PGA Tour, clocking up seven wins and a PGA Championship in 2017. He’s rolling out a fantastic season, being named 2017 PGA Tour Player of the Year, Golf Magazine’s Player of the Year, as well as being named the 2017 FedexCup Champion. As defending champion riding a wave of wins, Thomas could definitely take his second major this year.

Wildcard pick:

Patrick Reed

Reed is looking good this season, having won his first major title in April at The Masters, beating out countryman, Rickie Fowler, by a single stroke. Back in 2006 he won the Junior Open, with his championship debut at Hoylake in 2014. Reed has gone on to make it to World No. 7 and has been a star player in the past two Ryder Cups. He was a top contender in the US Open this year, before slipping to fourth place, and he was the youngest winner of a World Golf Championships event at the age of 23.

Current betting odds: 40/1
