England and Sri Lanka will continue an excellent summer of cricket with their upcoming ODI series. Sri Lanka will be looking for a response after suffering a devastating defeat in the most recent T20 series. However, they will once again be the BetXChange outsiders to get the win over their hosts.
England vs Sri Lanka ODI Preview
The opening test of the ODI series between the two nations gets underway on Tuesday, with the first match between the teams taking place at the Riverside Ground. There will be two matches that follow the first ODI, with the second taking place on Thursday and the final ODI taking place on Sunday.
Sri Lanka will be looking for an improvement after suffering a whitewash defeat in the recent T20 series between the nations. England will be looking to continue their momentum, as they face an impressive Pakistan side in ODI format shortly after this series against Sri Lanka.
England were in impressive form in the third T20 international between the sides, as they won by a wide margin. In the end, England held on to claim victory by 89 runs, as they got all Sri Lanka batters out without the tourists about to hit 100. The hosts batted first, and struck an impressive 180/6 over their 20 overs. Dawid Malan was in excellent form for England, as he smashed an impressive 76 from 48 balls. Jonny Bairstow also continued his good form with another 51. Meanwhile, Liam Livingston was the next highest scorer, as he hit 14 from ten balls.
The hosts collapsed slightly in the middle order, as Sri Lanka started a slight fightback. However, they were still set a high total to chase despite the impressive form of Dushmantha Chameera, who took a career-best four wickets. Sri Lanka could only score 91 in response against England, with David Willey taking three wickets and Sam Curran taking two. Moeen Ali took the final wicket in the victory for England at the Rose Bowl.
Sri Lanka’s batters struggled throughout their innings, and that was highlighted by the low scores that they achieved. Binura Fernando was the leading batsman in the final match for Sri Lanka, but he managed just 20. Meanwhile, Oshada Fernando and Niroshan Dickwella scored 19 and 11 respectively. The batters will need to be in better form against England to start this ODI series.
ODI Head to Head
There have been more ODI matches between these nations than any other format. Sri Lanka and England have met in ODI matches on 75 previous occasions, and the nations are both deadlocked with 36 wins apiece. However, England have been more successful in the most recent ODIs, as they have won four of the previous five. The most recent ODI between Sri Lanka and England was played in November 2018.
England vs Sri Lanka ODI Prediction
It would be hard to make a case for Sri Lanka based on the performance that they put in throughout the recent T20 series. Therefore, we expect England to win the opening match between the nations, which could put them on course for another sweep.
