Tournament Preview
The European Tour heads to the Spanish capital as some of the top names on the continent face off at the Open de España. Having been an event on the European Tour for almost a century, the event is hugely prestigious on the European golf circuit – having been launched way back in 1912. Colin Montgomerie, Miguel Angel Jimenez, and Jon Rahm are just three names that make up an impressive alumni in the Spanish sunshine. With the Ryder Cup disappointment still prevalent for many European golfing fans, a return to familiar conditions could suit plenty of players in the field here.
Betting Preview
Outright Winner
There are plenty of big names descending on Club Campo Villa de Madrid this week in what promises to be a hotly contested four days of golf:-
Defending champion and European Ryder Cup hero Jon Rahm looks to be the man to beat at his home event and if he plays anywhere his normal level, he could romp home here.
Austrian Bernd Wiesberger didn’t enjoy the best Ryder Cup debut at Whistling Straits last time out but his record on the European Tour is imperious and he could be good value this week.
Another home favourite sure to be in the mix here is Adri Arnaus, a skilful ball striker that is always capable of shooting low scores on any golf course he encounters.
Frenchman Victor Perez hasn’t been able to show his best form of late but in a relatively open field he has plenty of talent and could sneak under the radar this week.
Englishman Andy Sullivan has enjoyed an excellent season on the European Tour and he looks completely overpriced to feature heavily here in Madrid.
1st Round Leader
Producing the goods over 72 holes is often the most difficult thing for any golfer to do therefore here are our first round leader picks:-
Experienced Spaniard Rafa Cabrera Bello finished runner up at this event back in 2019 and he could be a player that could get off to a flyer in familiar conditions this week.
Englishman Jordan Smith has produced some excellent performances on the European Tour in recent times and he could start well in Spain this week.
Frenchman Alexander Levy has been out of the winners circle for far too long for a man of his talents and a return to familiar surrounds could be hugely helpful for him here in Madrid this week.
Top Ten Finish
With so many quality players assembled here in Spain, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 10 come Sunday:-
Italian Guido Migliozzi continues to be one of the most talked about prospects on the European Tour and he could be one to watch here in Madrid.
‘Beef’ as he’s affectionately known, won this event back in 2018 and although conditions were very different on that occasion, he is a proven performer at this level.
Scot Richie Ramsay continues to show real promise in every event he features and how he would love a strong week here in the Spanish sunshine.
