The tennis action continues over the next seven days or so, as Germany hosts the Hamburg Open. The competition gets underway on Saturday July 16th, with the final being played on Saturday, July 24th. Some of the best male players in the world will be in action in Hamburg, as the games are played at the AM Rothenbaum, which has housed games since 1924. It is a part of the ATP Tour 500, and has been since the 2009 edition of the competition.
History & Previous Winners
The Hamburg Open has been a part of the ATP tour since it was founded in 1892. It is one of the oldest events on the calendar, and this year’s competition is the 115th edition. It is played on outdoor clay courts by the male players, and was contested in May throughout its early years. However, it was pushed back two months back in 2009, and has been competed in July since then.
Some of the world’s best players have won this event throughout their careers. That includes Rafael Nadal, who has won on two occasions, and Roger Federer, who has won the top prize on four occasions. The reigning champion in the event is Spanish player Pablo Carreno Busta, who beat Filip Krajnovic in straight sets in the final in 2021.
Leading Contenders
The top seed has already fallen in the competition, which means that it looks set to be a wide open tournament. Pablo Carreno could be an outstanding chance in the BetXchange betting to regain the title, as he is seeded fourth for the event this year. The Spanish star recently made it through to the semi-finals of the Swedish Open, before he was beaten by Argentinean player Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets.
He did enjoy a fine run on the clay earlier in the year at the Barcelona Open, as he managed to make the final, before being beaten by Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets. He should have a big chance in Germany given the strong record that he has on the clay.
Diego Schwartzman should also have a strong chance in the competition this year. He reached the quarterfinals of the Swedish Open earlier in the month before losing to Carreno. He enjoyed a fine run at the French Open earlier in the year, as he beat a number of seeded players before falling to Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the fourth round.
Karen Khachanov could also enjoy an excellent tournament in Germany. He is seeded seventh for the competition, and comes up against German player Jan-Lennard Struff in the round of 32. The Russian reached the quarterfinals at the Halle Open in June, and made it through to the fourth round at the French Open before being beaten by Carlos Alcarez.
Hamburg Open Prediction
We are going to side with another former champion for the Hamburg Open. Andrey Rublev won the competition in 2020, and also reach the final in 2019 before falling to defeat in three sets. He reached the semi-final at the Swedish Open earlier in the month, and impressed earlier in the year when reaching the quarterfinals at the French Open.
