Outright Winner
The European Tour continues provide drama week in, week out and this should be another excellent week at Valderrama: –
Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick has been a pillar of consistency over the past few seasons and how he would love to pick up another tournament win here in Spain.
Scot Robert Macintyre emerged victorious at the Italian Open last month and his game looks almost tailormade for conditions here in Spain this week.
New Zealander Ryan Fox prevailed at the Alfred Dunhill Championships in Scotland last time out and whilst conditions could not be more different here, he should have plenty of confidence.
A home favourite sure to be in the mix here is Adri Arnaus, a skilful ball striker that is always capable of shooting low scores on any golf course he encounters.
Englishman Andy Sullivan has produced some much better golf in 2022 and he will be confident he can mix it with the big boys in favourable playing conditions in Spain this week.
1st Round Leader
Producing the goods over 72 holes is often the most difficult thing for any golfer to do therefore here are our first round leader picks:-
Englishman Callum Shinkwin has been getting off to plenty of fast starts in recent weeks, without necessarily kicking on but he will be hoping to be quick out of the blocks again this weekend.
Dutchman Joost Luiten has really struggled to patch any form together for the past 12 months or so, but he could be well suited to the conditions here in Spain.
Welshman Jamie Donaldson always produces solid golf in every event he plays and with the conditions set fair in Southern Spain, he could go well this week.
Top Ten Finish
With so many quality players assembled here at Valderrama, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 10 come Sunday:-
Belgian Thomas Detry is a proven performer on the European Tour, and he is regularly in the mix in all of the biggest events on the circuit.
Jordan Smith hasn’t perhaps kicked on as many people would have expected in 2022 but he has an excellent game, which should hold up well in Spain this week.
There is no doubting the quality Thorbjorn Olesen possesses, particularly at DP World Tour level but his results have been poor in 2022 – something he will want to address here in Spain.
