Round 6 of the 2024 Currie Cup is approaching, so we’re bringing you the previews and BetXchange odds for all four matches this week.
Golden Lions VS Pumas
Saturday, 10 August – Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg
The Currie Cup is a sprint, and the Golden Lions and Pumas will look to stay in semi-final contention when they meet in Johannesburg this weekend.
The Lions are third after five games, with 18 points from four wins and one loss. The Pumas also have 18 points, with their record of three wins, one draw, and one defeat backed up with important bonus points.
Pumas have won three of the last five meetings between the two, but the home side has prevailed on four of five occasions during that span. That home field gets the Golden Lions the nod as they win, but I like Pumas to cover.
Blue Bulls VS Griffons
Saturday, 10 August – Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria
This one has every chance of getting ugly. First takes on last on the log, with the undefeated Blue Bulls sitting on 21 points from five games. The Griffons have been heavily outclassed this season, losing all five matches and picking up just two bonus points along the way.
The Bulls are off the board to win, while the line cannot be set high enough. The Griffons have a point difference of -177, and they have already conceded 82 points (Cheetahs) and 52 points (Blue Bulls) in games this season.
The 52-10 drubbing that the Blue Bulls game the Griffons on the road in Round 2 does not bode well for the away side here. The Blue Bulls will score 50+ without trying, so a cover is on the cards.
Western Province VS Cheetahs
Saturday, 10 August – DHL Stadium, Cape Town
This one has the potential to be fun. Western Procing is fifth on the list with 13 points, while the CHeetahs are second with 18 points thanks to their +72 point differential.
It is worth noting that +60 of those points came in their 82-20 Round 1 win over the Griffons, though the Cheetahs have had the better of WP recently.
The Cheetahs’ 37-17 win over Western Province in Round 2 in Bloemfontein marked their fifth win on the bounce in this fixture. During those games, they have outscored WP by an average of 28 to 19, and I expect them to have enough to win again here.
Sharks VS Griquas
Saturday, 11 August – Hollywoodbets Kings Park, Durban
Griquas beat the Sharks 34-31 in Round 2 in Kimberley, but that is their only win this season. They have since lost three in a row, including an ugly 66-26 defeat at the hands of the Pumas in ROund 4.
The Sharks seem to have found a little form. They won in Round 4 over the Golden Lions in a nice win on the road before drawing 44-44 in an all-offense clash with the Pumas last time out.
The Sharks have won three of the last five matchups between the two teams, and I think they will take another victory by a try or so here.
