It is time for the second tournament of the 2025 FedEx Cup playoffs, as the top 50 players on the points list head to Owings Mills, Maryland, and the BMW Championship.
The best golfers on tour will fight to avoid elimination by finishing in the top 30 in points after Owings Mills. Next week, those who qualify will move on to the Tour Championship, which is played August 21 to 24 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.
Event Information
The BMW Championship, originally played as the Wester Open in 1899, is the oldest regular PGA Tour event outside the four majors. It was initially played in and around the state of Illinois. The BMW Championship began in 2007, with a new format as part of the FedEx Cup playoffs. This will be the second time Caves Valley Golf Club has hosted the BMW Championship, following its debut on the course rotation in 2021.
Caves Valley Golf Club plays as a 7,366-yard, par-70 course.
BMW Championship Championship Odds
BMW Championship odds to win with BetXchange:
- Scottie Scheffler – 14/5
- Rory McIlroy – 8/1
- Tommy Fleetwood – 22/1
- Xander Schauffele – 22/1
- Ludvig Aaberg – 24/1
- Patrick Cantlay – 25/1
The obvious big news is that Rory McIlroy is back after skipping the first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs last week in Memphis. McIlroy decided to rest his body rather than play the St. Jude Championship, comfortable knowing he would be among the top 50-point scorers no matter what happened at TPC Southwind. It will be interesting to see how the quick break affects his game.
Scottie Scheffler is, as always, the favorite to win another PGA Tour event. One name to look out for who hasn’t been in great form is Patrick Cantlay. Cantlay won the 2021 edition of this event, so he has previous experience of victory on this course.
BMW Championship Leading Contenders
One player who won’t feature in the outcome of this tournament is Sepp Straka. Straka, who was priced at around 40/1, is currently No. 5 in the FedEx Cup rankings, but he withdrew on Monday for personal reasons.
Cantlay has won this event twice, and he might be worth a play here. J.J. Spaun is having a surprisingly good season. He lost in a playoff at St. Jude, and he is 35/1 to go one better and win here. This would continue his progression in a season where he has finished in the top 10 six times and claimed his first major at the US Open. Justin Rose, the winner in Memphis, is 60/1 to win back-to-back.
Scheffler is going to be tough to beat again. He was hot off of making it a three-way playoff last weekend, posting four scores in the 60s with a 67 as his worst round. He was again one of the top players in gaining shots into the greens, continuing the masterful iron play that has seen him land inside the top-10 in 14 of 17 tournaments this season.
BMW Championship Prediction
It is boring, but Scheffler is the pick. He only has one FedEx Cup Playoffs victory in his career, though at last year’s Tour Championship. I like him to take a victory in Maryland and have all the momentum as he defends that title next weekend.
Pick: Scottie Scheffler – 14/5
