As an organizer, you always want the last match of a league to mean something. That is exactly what we have here as the Paarl Royals host the Joburg Super Kings with both franchises needing a win to improve their standings as the 2026 SA20 moves into its playoff phase.
The results over the weekend have seen Paarl with work to do to find their way into Qualifier 1 and avoid the drama of the Eliminator. Sunrisers Eastern Cape beat MI Cape Town by seven wickets on the final ball on Sunday, securing their spot as one of the top two teams. Paarl would need a bonus point win to run them down.
The Pretoria Capitals’ late-season surge continued on Saturday as theybeat the Joburg Super Kings by 21 runs. That win was their fourth in their last five games, shooting them up to 24 points with a better NRR than Paarl. Paarl must win here to take second place back from Pretoria.
The situation is even more dire for the Super Kings. They win, they go into the Eliminator as the fourth-placed side on the log. If they lose, their season is done. The combination of their defeat at the hands of Pretoria and Durban’s Super Giants beating Paarl by 58 runs in Saturday’s first game means that DSG are now two points up on the Super Kings and holding onto that final playoff spot.
This should be a cracking encounter with plenty on the line.
Paarl Royals
It was Aiden Markram who did the damage as DSG took down Paarl in their last game. His 108 was one of the batting performances of the season, on a surface that was getting tricky as he smashed the bowling of the Royals all over the ground.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius will always be a key wicket, and it feels like he will have to have a big game here. Paarl had won their previous two matches to put themselves in a position to finish in the top two, and they will need to rediscover that form against the Super Kings.
Joburg Super Kings
The Super Kings must be kicking themselves after their performance against Pretoria. They had the game in their hands, with Pretoiria marooned at 7 for 5 on a terrible surface. A century stand for the sixth wicket between Sherfance Rutherford and Dewald Brevis rescued Preotirai and, combined with other results, has JSK on the brink of elimination.
The form of seamers Daniel Worrall and Wiaan Mulder should at least give Super Kings’ fans some sense that they can do enough to beat Paarl here.
Best Bets
Take Paarl to win here. The Super Kings have fallen apart after a strong start to the year. They won their first three matches but haven’t won a game in the six games since. There is no reason to think that will change, even with their season on the line.
