Venue: Celtic Manor, Newport, Wales.
Dates: 4th – 7th August 2022
Tournament Preview
Former Ryder Cup venue Celtic Manor will play host to the Cazoo Wales Open on the latest leg of the UK swing on the DP World Tour. The event takes place on the Twenty 10 course in South Wales, the iconic venue of a European Ryder Cup win for Colin Montgomerie’s men. Three consecutive European Tour events have been held on British soil and crowds and furore surrounding the events suggest that European golf is working its way back on to the map. Whilst many big events have been played at Celtic Manor, this is the third hosting of the Cazoo Wales Open and there is a stellar field assembled here in South Wales. And with over 1.75 million euros in the prize pot – there are plenty of Order of Merit points and prize money to play for.
Betting Preview
Outright Winner
The European Tour continues to draw in excellent crowds and it promises to be another excellent week of golf at Celtic Manor: –
Englishman Jordan Smith has been prolific on the DP World Tour over the past couple of years and he starts this event as one of the clear favourites to go all the way.
Belgian Thomas Detry is a pillar of consistency on the DP World Tour and with conditions sure to suit his game, he too should go well here.
Englishman Callum Shinkwin has been striking the ball very well of late and in familiar climbs here at Celtic Manor, he should be in contention come Sunday afternoon.
Fresh off his win at the English Open last weekend, Sean Crocker should arrive here full of confidence, and he is in the form of his life.
Young Scot Connor Syme made all the running at the Celtic Classic in 2020 before being pipped on the Sunday, a suggestion he enjoys this course at Celtic Manor.
1st Round Leader
Producing the goods over 72 holes is often the most difficult thing for any golfer to do therefore here are our first round leader picks:-
Frenchman Victor Perez is one of the very best players in action on the DP World Tour and if he starts firing, he can be hard to stop.
American John Caitlin is a consistent performer at this level and in conditions that should suit, he could be a candidate to go well at Celtic Manor this week.
Top Five Finish
With so many quality players assembled here in Newport, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 10 come Sunday:-
Having shown glimpses of his best form since returning to action, Thorbjorn Olesen is one of the best players on the DP World Tour on his day and he could sneak into the top 10 come Sunday.
Englishman Eddie Pepperell is a classy performer and with some strong showings in recent weeks, he could well be in contention come Sunday here.
