History
India and South Africa meet in Colombo on Tuesday in the second match of the 2025 Sri Lanka Women’s Tri-Nation Series. The series sees India, South Africa, and hosts Sri Lanka face off against each other twice in a double round-robin format for the group stage. The two teams with the best record will meet on May 11 in the final. All seven games are being played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Sri Lanka’s executive and judicial capital city, Colombo.
The matches will all be played in the ODI format, serving as preparation for the three countries ahead of the 2024 Women’s Cricket World Cup. That tournament will be held in September and October this year in India.
South Africa will be the final team of the three to start their tri-series campaign. India and Sri Lanka faced off in the first match on April 27, with India coming out as convincing winners.
After winning the toss and electing to field, India bowled out their hosts for 147 in 38.1 overs. It never seemed like a big enough score given the runs in this Indian side, and that proved to be the case. Pratika Rawal top scored with an unbeaten 50 as India lost just one wicket on their way to 149 runs in under 30 overs.
India
Rawal was the star, but she was ably assisted at the crease by Smriti Mandhana and Harleen Deol. These three will look to give India a platform if they bat first, or aim to score heavily if they are chasing and the weather threat looms.
Sneh Rana made her ODI comeback after 17 months and looked like she had never been away. He picked up three wickets as the Indian bowling tore through the Sri Lanka lineup.
South Africa
The Proteas look to improve after dropping their last ODI series 2-1 to England on home soil. As much as winning this tri-series would be a bonus, the primary purpose of this event is to build cohesion and relationships, with the World Cup just around the corner.
South Africa skipper Laura Wolvaardt will be an essential figure on Tuesday. She has averaged 38.50 in 19 One-Day Internationals against India. She has a single century, but six fifties in the rivalry, and I feel she will need to cross that half-century mark again for South Africa to have a chance.
Best Bets
India is a heavy favorite on Tuesday, and they have had the upper hand in this series historically. There have been 31 ODIs between India and South Africa in the women’s game, with India winning 18, South Africa winning 12, and one match finishing with no result.
The match between India and Sri Lanka was reduced to 39 overs because of rain. It is that time of year on the subcontinent, so expect overcast conditions and a soggy pitch. Batting to over 250 would be seen as outstanding, while even a score in the low 200s could be defendable depending on how the weather deteriorates throughout the afternoon.
A couple of bets I like are Wolvaardt to be South Africa’s top batter at 7/5 and for Deepti Sharma to be India’s best bowler at 4/1.
