History

The noisy neighbors will be at it again as Manchester City travels to Old Trafford on Sunday for the latest edition of the Manchester derby.

It is fair to say that both these teams have underachieved this season. City has slipped from their usual high standard, with a place in next season’s Champions League and a potential FA Cup win the only remaining options for a team used to fighting on three or four fronts.

A combination of players getting old in a hurry and some badly timed critical injuries has really hit City hard this season. Pep Guardiola splashed the cash in the January transfer window, bringing in some immediate reinforcements before an expected squad overhaul in the summer.

The first of those dominos dropped this week, with the legendary Kecin de Bruyne announcing that he would leave the Citizens at the end of the season. De Bruyne has won 16 trophies in 10 years at the club and is a two-time Premier League Player of the Season. This will be his last Manchester derby, so he will look to impress in what is always City’s biggest fixture of the season.

Manchester United

United boss Ruben Amorim spoke this week about pushing for the Premier League title sooner rather than later. It was a bold statement from a bold man, especially given the clearout that will happen at Old Trafford to build a squad deep enough and capable enough to play his preferred 3-4-3 system.

The success of Marcus Rashford on loan at Aston Villa and Anthony at Real Betis speaks volumes about the need to reshape the culture in the red half of Manchester.

United beat City in December’s Premier League clash thanks to a late goal from Amad Diallo. Diallo was one of United’s brightest sparks this season, with his injury adding to a long list of players that Amorim has been without in 2025.

The good news for United is that Kobbie Meinoo is back in training and ready to reclaim his midfield spot. The bad news is that they are still so light that Harry Maguire had to be thrown on as an emergency striker late in their midweek defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest.

Manchester City

Earling Haaland’s ankle injury is a high blow to City. The Norwegian goal machine is expected to miss up to seven weeks. The smart money is that we won’t see Haalnad again in the Premier League this season.

While losing Haaland and his goals is a blow, City at least has new recruit Omar Marmoush as a stand-in striker with plenty of ability. Their bigger injury issues remain a the other end of the pitch.

Many see the Citizens’ fall from the league because of the loss of holding midfielder Rodri to an ACL injury early in the season. John Stones, Manuel Akanjo, and Nathan Aki are all centerbacks who would be in contention to start in their best side.

Best Bets

United are so bad. It is hard to see them finding any way to win this against a City team that breezed past Leicester City without breaking a sweat midweek. The City business model depends on Champions League football, while United will have one eye on their upcoming Ruropa League quarterfinal against Lyon on Thursday.

City will win and score at least two goals.
