Tournament Preview
The European Tour rolls on to the Algarve where the continent’s elite battle it out at the Portugal Masters. The event is relatively new on the European Tour – having been launched in 2007 but it has enjoyed a rich recent history of winners Shane Lowry, Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington just some of the big names to have lifted the trophy. All eyes will be on acquiring ranking points and prize money and with a €2 million prize pot on offer, there is plenty to play for here in the Southern Portugal sunshine this week.
Betting Preview
Outright Winner
There are plenty of big names descending on the Algarve this week in what promises to be a hotly contested four days of golf:-
Scot Robert Macintyre is developing into one of the most consistent performers on the European Tour and he will be eying up a Ryder Cup spot next September.
Classy Englishman Jordan Smith will be another of the front runners here in Portugal and conditions should certainly suit his game.
Andy Sullivan hasn’t been able to hit the heights of previous seasons on the DP World Tour Tour, but his game looks tailor-made for conditions here in Portugal and he could sneak under the radar.
Englishman Matt Wallace will be in the mix in this impressive field here in Portugal and he will be keen to put on a performance as the season draws to a close.
Malaysian Gavin Green is a man who is capable of mixing it up in any field on his day and he will be hoping to start finding some form in Portugal this weekend.
1st Round Leader
Producing the goods over 72 holes is often the most difficult thing for any golfer to do therefore here are our first round leader picks:-
Frenchman Victor Perez always looks to get off to a fast start in any event he plays, and he will be eager to lay down a marker from the outset this week.
Enigmatic Dane Thorbjorn Olesen hasn’t been in the best of nick throughout 2022 but there have been glimpses in recent weeks that he is returning to his best form.
Top Five Finish
With so many quality players assembled here in the Algarve, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 5 come Sunday:-
Fresh off his win in Mallorca last week, German Yannick Paul will be eager to put in another strong performance in similar conditions here in the Algarve.
American John Caitlin has been battling with his all-round game in recent weeks, but his overall performances remain relatively consistent, making him a candidate to be in the mix on Sunday.
It has largely been a season to forget for Tom Lewis, but the Englishman hit the ball as cleanly as anybody on tour, making him an outside shot at the very least here in Portugal.
