The Sun Met Celebrated with Mumm (previously known as the J&B Met), will be taking place on Saturday 28th January 2017 at Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town. Although the name has changed, the expected glitz, glamour, elegance and pizazz will most certainly not change and you can expect the same excitement, fun and great event as before.
Although the Horses that are racing at The Sun Met take centre stage, they are often outdone by the exceptional fashion that flaunts the race course. Each year The Sun Met chooses a theme that all who are attending need to adhere to.
Decades of Glamour: Sun Met Theme for 2017
It’s Decades of Glamour! (que squeals of excitement). The theme “Decades of Glamour” aims to capture the last eight decades of fashion from frilly vintage dresses to chique modern ensembles. The list is endless when it comes to ideas, but we’ve narrowed down a few for you:

1920’s – The 1920’s was characterised by two distinct fashions, the first was traditional as people were slow to adopt the new fashion and the second was the Roaring Twenties, characterised by Cloche hats, bobbed haircuts, low waisted dresses with fullness at the hemline as well as shift dresses and pleated skirts. For the first time in history, fashion influences and trends were coming from movie stars. Women and men wanted to emulate the styles of Hollywood stars such as Louise Brooks, Greta Garbo, Rudolph Valentino, and Clark Gable.
1930’s – When you think of 1930’s fashion think of attention to the shoulder with Butterfly sleeves and Banjo Sleeves and exaggerated shoulder pads for both men and women. Fashion trendsetters in the 1930’s included The Prince of Wales (King Edward VIII) and his companion Wallis Simpson (the Duke and Duchess of Windsor from their marriage in June 1937), socialites, Nicolas de Gunzburg, Daisy Fellowes and Mona von Bismarck and Hollywood movie stars such as Fred Astaire, Carole Lombard and Joan Crawford. Accessories were an important part of any outfit, such as a halo hat, gloves and a clutch bag.
1940’s – Fashion of the 1940s were typically modeled after the utility clothes produced during war rationing. For example, most of the women’s fashions during the 1940s were designed with the same squared shoulders, small waist, and skirt above the knee. For this look think masculine and militant. A dress, blouse or jacket fitted with shoulder pads that extend just past the edge of the shoulder. Boxy or square necklines and shoulder angles. Puffed up sleeves with gathers at the top and extensions down to just above the elbow.

1950’s – When you think of 1950’s fashion think of Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Hepburn. This was a favourite fashion decade and included the introduction of the Bikini, the IT Bag and Christian Dior’s New Look. This era was feminine, sexy and a bit risqué. For men think Elvis Presley and Alfred Hitchcock, two fashion icons of the era.

1960’s – The “Swinging Decade” was an exciting one for fashion and included the likes of the Beehive hairstyle, geometric patterns and short skirts. Style icons of the decade were Twiggy, Edie Sedgwick, Jackie Onassis, Nancy Sinatra and Jane Fonda. For men it was The Beatles, President John F Kennedy, Jimi Hendrix, Sean Connery and Steve McQueen. All of these were the best dressed men of the 1960’s.
1970’s – Perhaps one of the more embarrassing era’s of fashion and perhaps not as elegant as previous era’s, the 1970’s were all about Bell-Bottoms, long hair and a more androgynous hippy look. But more importantly think Disco and glitter. For inspiration think of any character in That 70’s Show and you’ll hit the 70’s nail on the head.
1980’s – Oh dear, The 80’s. Dare we go there? Yes! Definitely one of the most colourful, crazy and fun era’s of fashion the 80’s were about lumo colours, crimped hair, side ponytails, perms, shoulder pads, big earrings and really bog anything. More was more and more was better in the 80’s. For inspiration think of Madonna, Princess Diana, Michael Jackson, Boy George, Joan Collins, Bananarama.
1990’s – We love the 90’s for the denim, flannel shirts, high waisted jeans, black leggings and oversized shirts, sweatpants, skirts, Birkenstocks, solid colors, silk shirts, turtlenecks (under cardigans or sweaters), plain white Keds and army surplus clothing. Denim was everything and everything was denim in the 90’s.
2000’s – Probably the best way to epitomise the fashion in the 2000’s was to look at the music stars of the era including Britney Spears early on and Justin Bieber later on. Think boyfriend blazers, comfortable chic, skinny jeans and popped collars, think Fedoras and shutter shades. These will all help you to find your perfect 2000’s fashion look.
