UFC Rio will be fantastic for all MMA bettors. There’s plenty of action ahead with some of the biggest names in the organization coming out on the mat.

Of course, the main focus is on Charles Oliveira, the home-crowd favorite, and arguably the biggest MMA star from this country, along with Alex Pereira. He faces one of the rising contenders in the lightweight division, Mateusz Gamrot, who is eager for some big fights and rivals.

The former flyweight champ, Deiveison Figueiredo, clashes with Montel Jackson, and this fight might have huge implications for the entire division and the battle for the title in the future.

Stay tuned to see our previews and picks for the top battles from this event. All those looking for UFC Rio odds, follow this link.

Oliveira vs. Gamrot Preview

Charles Oliveira, who will be nicknamed “Predator” in this one, instead of “Do Bronx,” comes into this event with 35 wins and 11 losses. The most recent was in his previous fight against Ilia Topuria, who knocked him out in the opening round, thus claiming the UFC lightweight belt.

This guy is one of the best grapplers ever, and that’s why he holds the most finishes in the UFC – 20, and most submissions ever in the UFC – 16. So we all know his style and his preferences on the mat. However, the loss to Topuria was very, very nasty, and it raised suspicions about his chin.

On the other hand, we have Gamrot, who wandered a bit in the UFC, mostly winning fights, but not getting enough attention from the organization in terms of having big-time fights. He did beat guys like Arman Tsarukyan, Rafael Fiziev, and Rafael dos Anjos, but apart from Tsarukyan, most of his rivals were past their peak.

The Pole has 25 wins, three defeats, and one no contest. He is extremely tough and durable, posting 12 triumphs via decision. Gamrot has two defeats in the UFC, and both could have gone the other way, meaning that this guy was never outperformed in the octagon.

Predictions

This is a battle that will take most of its time on the mat, because Gamrto also knows to wrestle and grapple. This guy is very well endowed in terms of technique, and he will be a challenge for Oliveira. Also, there’s plenty of pressure on the Brazilian, and we truly mean that the “guest” here has more chances to win.

Pick: Gamrot

Figueiredo vs. Jackson Preview

God of War started well in the bantamweight category, beating Cody Garbrandt and Marlon Vera, but he experienced back-to-back losses to Petr Yan and Cory Sandhagen.

Moving up, he lost some of his agility, and that’s an easily noticeable fact. But he is still aggressive and above-average in terms of explosiveness, which is why every attack he initiates is dangerous.

Meanwhile, Jackson is a guy with six wins in a row, though, against mediocre rivals. This will be his first test against top tire rivals and possibly a turning point in his career.

He is an explosive machine with fantastic athletic abilities. There isn’t a more powerful guy in the division, that is for sure. If Jackson catches his rival just a little bit with his fist, the chance of seeing him fall is pretty big.

Prediction

Sorry all the Brazil fans, our pick here is Jackson, who has what it takes to dismantle Figueiredo, particularly if he tries to open and attack. Jackson is faster and stronger, and that’s all you need to know. UFC Rio is his chance to step up his game.

Pick: Jackson

Other Bouts

Luque vs. Alvarez Preview

A risky pick given Luque’s experience and power, yet Alvarez is a dangerous finisher, and this is his welterweight debut. If he manages to strike early, Luque might struggle to recover.

Picks: Alvarez

Diniz vs. Pinto

Diniz seems more rounded, and we expect him to win the striking exchanges and perhaps exploit openings in Pinto’s game. The latter tends to take unnecessary risks.

Pick: Diniz

Ramos vs. Ofli

Ramos is inconsistent, but he has more experience against high-quality fighters. Against a fighter coming off a losing form, we give Ramos the nod.

Pick: Ramos
