AFCON is in its final phase, as the semis kick off this mid-week. There are two games for us this Wednesday: Senegal faces Egypt, and Nigeria meets the hosts, Morocco.

What can we say about these matchups? Are these four teams really the best in the tournament? It seems so. They played well, consistently, and didn’t have any blackouts or anything like that.

To be honest, they are not only the best teams, but also play the best football in terms of beauty. Plenty of goals took place with one of these units on the field.

Senegal VS Egypt

This is the replay of the AFCON final from four years ago, when Senegal beat Egypt on penalties, winning the competition for the first time ever. It was one of the most intense finals ever, and we are pretty sure that the memories are still overwhelming both teams.

Senegal beat Mali in the previous round, 1-0, and before that, Sudan, 3-1. This team is very poised on both ends of the field, with a deadly attack led by Mane. Though we have to say that the defense is doing a great job as well, recording three clean sheets in five appearances at the AFCON.

As for Egypt, there were some doubts about their quality, because of their age, but the Pharaohs once again proved their worth, especially against the Ivory Coast in the quarterfinals, 3-2, when they won, despite being the underdogs. This team is very adaptable, and that’s something that separates it from other units.

In head-to-head games, Senegal has the edge over Egypt these days. Not only did they beat them in the AFCON finals, but they also eliminated them in the World Cup playoffs four years ago. What’s noticeable in their meetings is that the last five were all under 2.5 hits.

Overall, this game isn’t just about the finals; it’s also about reputation and old debts. Egypt is good, but Senegal seems better, mainly because of its attack. And that’s why we lean on their side.

Nigeria VS Morocco

The Super Eagles once again have a potent and talented team, and we have to say they have achieved results here better than many expected. Morocco is the host and the top favorite here. Not just because of the venue, but also the fact that they reached the World Cup semis four years ago.

Nigeria has all five wins here at the AFCON, and their game relies on a very strong, potent offense that can crack any defense in the world. The Super Eagles netted at least twice in each event, and have a goal difference of 16-4. Now that’s impressive, no matter what anyone says.

As for Morocco, it has a totally different approach, where defense leads the way. The hosts have allowed just one goal throughout the tournament, against Mali in the group stage. During the knockout phase, they would beat Tanzania 1-0 and Cameroon 2-0. This is a very physical, tough team with incredible stamina.

Regarding their head-to-head games, the last one was in 2018, when Morocco won, 4-0, yet that was a long time ago, and that result can’t really say anything about today’s teams.

This game will see a moderate efficiency, meaning two or three goals. Only one of Morocco’s games in the tournament didn’t end like that, and even though Nigeria plays high-scoring football, we won’t see fireworks here because of the very high stakes. But on the other side, low efficiency is unexpected as well.
