Golf: PGA Tour – Safeway Open
Venue: Silverado Country Club, California.
Dates: Thursday 10th – Sunday 13rd September 2020
Following the conclusion of the FedEx Cup last week, the PGA Tour begins again in earnest with the Safeway Open in California. First played on the PGA Tour back in 2007, the Safeway Open has become one of the most reputable events on the tour – consistently growing in stature year by year. Previous winners of the event include Jimmy Walker, Jonas Blixt and Cameron Champ, testament to the prestige of the event on the PGA Tour. With over $6.5 million in the prize pot too, it is certainly an event worth winning, which should add to the drama in California this week.
The Safeway Open is one of the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour and there are plenty of big names hoping to etch their names into the history books in 2020:-
Young Korean Si Woo Kim has been lighting up the PGA Tour this season and he will be keen to showcase his talents once more in an event he will fancy his chances in.
Two-time Safeway Open champion Brendan Steele is one of the most consistent performers around and few players enjoy the conditions in Napa as much as him.
‘Lefty’ is always in the mix in the biggest events on the tour and he will be keen to put down a marker here in an event he has never managed to win.
Reigning Open Champion Shane Lowry has lacked consistency so far this term but is a canny operator and he will be in contention if he plays anything like his best golf this week.
Despite not showing any sort of form since the PGA Tour restarted, Chez Reavie is a solid performer at this level and he will fancy his chances here in Napa this week.
1st Round Leader
Producing the goods over 72 holes is often the most difficult thing for any golfer to do therefore here are our first round leader picks:-
Charismatic American Brandt Snedeker is one of a host of names looking for form once more since the season restart and the 2018 Safeway Open runner up could find it this week.
2015 Safeway Open champion Emiliano Grillo has been in excellent form all season and could get off to another flyer here in one of his favourite events.
Former US Ryder Cup player Keegan Bradley has been on the periphery in recent seasons and he will be hoping to return to form with a bang this week.
Top Ten Finish
With so many quality players assembled here in California, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 10 come Sunday:-
Former Masters champion Sergio Garcia picks and chooses the events he plays on the PGA Tour and he must be fancying his chances of a decent week in California this weekend.
Three-time major winner Jordan Spieth has really struggled for form in recent months, but a mid-season break could see him come back fit and firing.
US Ryder Cup stalwart Lucas Glover is a top-level performer on his day, and he will be looking to break the top 10 in California this week.
