History

You certainly can’t say that the 2026 edition of the SA20 competition has been anything other than epically exciting. Just when it looks like certain teams will pull away from the field at the top of the log, an upset springs that tightens everything together again.

That was certainly the case on Sunday when Sunrisers Eastern Cape missed a golden opportunity to distance themselves at the top. Knowing a win would put them six points clear, Sunrisers lost a nailbiter by two wickets to Durban’s Super Giants in the final over. This is the same Super Giants squad that was propping up the standings coming into the contest.

Durban’s win means MI Cape Town is now at the bottom of the log. MICT has two wins, four defeats, and one no result on the season. This gives them a total of 10 points from seven games. They are five points outside of the playoff spots, with both the Pretoria Capitals in third and Paarl Royals in fourth having 15 points.

The Capitals can go top with a bonus point win. They are one of three teams with a positive NRR on the season, and their three wins are tied for the best in the comp. Their three losses and one no result have put the Capitals in a position where their playoff life is in their own hands as we come down the stretch.

Pretoria Capitals

The Capitals smashed MICT when they met at Newlands in Match 8 of the season. They raced out to an impressive 220/5 from their 20 overs, riding a quickfire 60 from Wihan Lubbe. They also got a dominant bowling performance from Sherfane Rutherford, who took 4 for 24 from three overs.

MI Cape Town

MICT tends to go as well as the outstanding Ryan Rickelton goes in their games this season. Rickelton has been the outstanding bat in the entire comp, putting this team on his shoulders and willing them over the line. That was not the case in Match 8, with the slasher losing his wicket after a quickfire 33 from 17 balls.

Best Bets

The wackiness of this comp is evident from these two being the top-form sides in the 2026 SA20. MICT lost four of their first five, with one no result, before reeling off two impressive victories in their last two games. The Capitals added to their Match 8 win over MICT with a pair of wins in their last two outings.

MICT will win this. Rickelton has smashed himself into outstanding form, and even at 22/5, there is value in him being the top bat here. Shai Hope at 24/5 is worth a dabble as the best bat if you think the hosts can hold their ground against a bang-in-form MICT outfit.
