Golf: PGA Tour – 3M Open
Venue: TPC Twin Cities, Minnesota
Dates: Thursday 21st – Sunday 24th July 2022
3M have held an event on the PGA Tour since 1993 and the 3M Open is the most recent version of the event – having launched in 2019. With the LIV Golf Series threatening the very being of the PGA Tour, most of the big names are picking and choosing their events on the schedule but there is an impressive field assembled here at the TPC Twin Cities course. $7 million constitutes the impressive prize pot at the 3M Open this year and the field will be vying to take the title from defending champion Cameron Champ.
Most of the major players on the PGA Tour look to be finding their rhythm after the Open Championship last week, which should set up an excellent weekend of golf here in Minnesota:
American Tony Finau will be keen to keep ticking along in the world’s top 10 and he has a game that looks to be well suited to conditions here.
2021 Masters Champion Hideki Matsuyama will also be a great fit for conditions here in Minnesota and how he would love to register a win here.
South Korean Sungjae Im is prolific at this level and picking up tournament wins is all he needs to do to elevate him to the next level.
Canadian Adam Hadwin is a clean ball striker and his performances of late suggest that should he find form here; he will be in the mix on Sunday afternoon.
Dropping out of contention after holding the lead at the Scottish Open will have hurt Cameron Tringale but he’s a classy performer and he should bounce back here.
1st Round Leader
With players still trying to find momentum within their respective seasons, getting off to a fast start could be hugely important here in Minnesota:
Few players are as steady on the PGA Tour as JT Poston and with conditions sure to suit his solid game here, he could get off to a flyer.
Scot Martin Laird has endured a quiet spell on the PGA Tour but he is another player that can come good at any time, especially in a field as open as this.
Top 10 Finish
With so many good players assembled here in Minnesota, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 10 come Sunday:
Defending champion Cameron Champ clearly enjoys the playing conditions here in Minnesota and few would be against him finishing in the top 10.
American Rickie Fowler is the forgotten man of golf of late, but he was in the mix for long periods at the Open Championship last weekend and should take confidence from that.
Big-hitting Ryan Moore is always in contention and in the absence of some of the biggest names in the game, he could be a good shout to sneak into the top 10.
