Erin Hills, Wisconsin is preparing to welcome golfing greats onto its immaculate greens from 12 to 18 June 2017 for the highly-anticipated US Open Championship. Golfers competing for this illustrious title, previously bestowed upon the likes of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, will be pushed to their limits as the United States Golf Association ensures a challenging course to identify the world’s best. 1. Dustin Johnson
It’s no surprise that World No.1 golfer, Dustin Johnson, is the outright favourite to win the upcoming US Open, a title he has snatched before. The 15-time PGA Tour winner had to pull out of the 2017 US Masters in April because of a freak back injury, paving the way for a shock victory by Sergio Garcia. Prior to this withdrawal, the 32-year-old American golfer had been on an impressive winning streak, propelling from his 2016 US Open at Oakmont Country Club.

2. Rory McIlroy
With 13 PGA Tour wins in his 28 years, this Northern Irish golfer is a definite contender for the US Open 2017 trophy. At the age of two, McIlroy was hitting 40-yard drives and, by age 16, he was the youngest player to win the Irish Amateur Closed Championship in 2005. He won the US Open in 2011 so he has what it takes to win it again. In the past few days, McIlroy signed an equipment deal with TaylorMade and he’s particularly excited about the TaylorMade TP5x ball which performs well in windy conditions – a topic he was particularly critical about following his Master’s performance. With two PGA Tour wins this year – just one off Dustin Johnson – and 9 PGA Tour wins in total, this 23-year-old Texan has a very promising golfing career ahead of him. In 2015, Spieth took both the Masters and US Open titles but he will want to re-claim some of this glory following a lacklustre performance at the US Masters this year where he tied for 11th place with Rickie Fowler.

Although he has 10 PGA Tour wins, the 29-year-old Australian suffered some personal setbacks when his mother was diagnosed with cancer. However, her recovery has prompted a re-boot of his mental game and he hopes to re-gain the World No. 1 spot he achieved in 2015. Day admits the Dustin Johnson, who is currently playing his best golf, will be a tough one to topple, but Day is renowned for his ambition so he’s not to be underestimated.

Matsuyama is a dedicated player who has overcome many odds to reach the level of professional golfing he’s achieved, including four PGA Tour wins. The 25-year-old Japanese player learnt the game from his father, a former club champion, but has taken his playing to new heights. He first debuted at the Masters in 2011 mere weeks after he returned to an earthquake and Tsunami-affected Japan where his university dorm room had been destroyed. He has already won the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions and Waste Management Phoenix Open this year so he seems to be on a winning streak.
