The year’s next signature event on the PGA Tour is just around the corner, as play at Torrey Pines Gold Course, close to San Diego in California, will get underway on Thursday. It will be a fascinating show of early season form, with the winning player also picking up $4 million of the $20 million purse.

While it sounds like a new event, only six events on the PGA Tour are older than the Genesis Invitational. The Invitational began in 1926 as the Los Angeles Open and will celebrate its 100th birthday next year.

It is the last US leg of the PTA Tour’s West Coast swing. After the Mexico Open next week, the golfers will tackle courses in Florida throughout March.

Event Information

The 2025 Genesis Invitational was due to be the 61st edition of the event held at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. The Pacific Palisades course has been the base for the Invitatonal since 1973, with two events being moved due to other course obligations.

This year, the Genesis Invitational has had to be moved to San Diego because of the devastating wildfires in the region. It is the first time the Genesis Invitational has been hosted outside of Los Angeles County.

2025 Genesis Invitational Leading Contenders

This is a strong field, as you would expect from a PGA Tour Signature event with a purse of $20 million.

The No. 1 player in the world is the favorite, though Scottie Scheffler has yet to win on the tour this season. World No. 3 Rory McIlroy is lurking as the 13/2 second favorite, and he is clearly in mid-season form already, having just won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am by two strokes over Irishman Shane Lowry.

World No. 2 Xander Schauffele is still missing because of a rib injury he picked up earlier this season, so Scheffler and McIlory are clear betting favorites ahead of World No. 4 Collin Morikawa at 18/1.

Six repeat winners have won the Genesis Invitational, and Hideki Matsuyama is looking to become the seventh this weekend. At 28/1, Matsuyama comes into this tournament (to be played on a different course) as the sixth favorite. Matsuyama does have early season form. He won The Sentry in Hawaii, the first Signature Event on the 2025 PGA Tour calendar.

Harris English has form on this course if you like a long shot. He won the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines at the end of January and is an 84/1 shot to repeat here. It is worth noting that only five of the top 20 players in the world were in the field for that tournament, but English is 9/5 for a Top 20 finish and 51/10 for a place inside the Top 10.

2025 Genesis Invitational Prediction

Looking down the betting odds, Tony Finau at 44/1 is worth a punt. He is 67/20 for a Top 10 finish and 38/5 to finish in the Top 5. This course suits his play style, and with a T13 at Pebble Beach and a T15 at The Sentry, the six-time PGA Tour winner is destined for a top-10 finish soon.

As for the winning pick, McIlroy has the hot hand. He would be my choice to come out on top over the next four days.

Pick: Rory McIlroy – 13/2
