The Toronto Raptors defeated Golden State Warriors in Game 6 of the NBA finals, 114-110, and took the title for the first time in their history.
The Canadians managed to secure the trophy after a huge and intense battle at the Oracle Arena, which saw 18 lead changes, another big-time injury and an awkward ending.
Klay Thompson, who was the best player of the Warriors this Thursday night had to leave the game with somewhat more than two minutes left in the third. He landed hard on his left leg after one contested dunk by Danny Green. Thompson immediately grabbed his knee and stayed down on the floor.
It would later come out that he tore his ACL. Up until that point, Klay scored 30 points in 32 minutes, and was without any doubt the best Warriors’ player on the court.
As for the odd ending, following Steph Curry’s miss behind the three-point line, Golden State called for a timeout which they didn’t have. They were given a technical foul, and Leonard increased their lead to 114-110, setting the final result and moving the Raptors to a safe distance.
Kawhi received the NBA Finals MVP award after the game ended, becoming the first player to win that with two teams from different conferences.
Leonard had 22 points last night, same as Fred VanVleet, while Pascal Siakam and Kyle Lowry led the way among the guests with 26 buckets each. Siakam added 10 boards and Lowry 10 assists on that.
With the Warriors, Curry scored 21 points, Iguodala had 22, while Draymond Green posted another triple-double with 11 buckets, 13 assists, and 19 boards.
This was the second time in his career that Leonard stops one team on its way towards a three-peat. First, it was Miami Heat and now is Golden State.
The next big thing in the NBA is the draft night in two weeks time.
