As mentioned in our article, 4 Horseracing events to place your bets on, the Sansui Summer Cup is a leading event that attracts star thoroughbred horses, their jockeys, owners and groomers as well as a vast array of spectators and betting enthusiasts to the grounds of Turfontein each year.

The Sansui Summer Cup, previously known as the Johannesburg Handicap first took place in 1887, as travellers from far and wide came to the Witwatersrand area in search of gold. The exciting event sprang into life on a dusty farm called Turfontein. Over the coming years however the races name, conditions and date changed a multitude of times which diminished its popularity. So in 1999 tote and horserace betting company, Phumelela re-established the Summer Cup to the horseracing calendar in its original form. In 2009 Sansui became the official sponsor.

Horse Race Betting

Betting at the Sansui Summer Cup is as exciting and nail-biting as betting on international horseracing events such as the Royal Ascot or Summer Cup ADT. Renowned trainer Mike de Kock has won the race a record nine times. These wins included Evening Mist (1989), Record Edge (1997), Golden Hoard (1998), Delta Form (2000), Ingelside (2001), Wolf Whistle (2003), Ilha da Vittoria (2005), Rudra (2008) and Flirtation (2010). In 2015 Mike de Kocks entries include Flying the Flag, Kingston Mines, Ahlaam, Alghadeer, Kingmambos Legacy, Akii Bua, Smart Mart and Crevasse, two of which are in the top 20 of the log. Last years winner was Louis the King, trained by Geoff Woodruff. This year however there are no horses in the top 20 of the log trained by Geoff Woodruff. Betting wisely on these horses means taking into consideration current form, distance suitability, MR and current well-being. Judging by the talk around town, Uncle Tommy seems to be a firm betting favorite this year as well as Smart Mart, Lady of Kildare and Big Shot for various reasons. It’s best to keep your eye on these fine thoroughbreds.

This years event takes place on the 26th November. It’s a good idea to keep your eye on the current betting odds at your favourite bookmaker in order to place your horseracing bets in good time.
