The Bundesliga season returned with a bang last weekend, as the top-flight in Germany became the first division in Europe to resume following the outbreak of the coronavirus. The action was as fast-paced as fans wanted it to be, and there are two tantalising fixtures that gamblers can look forward to this coming weekend.

Schalke 04 vs Augsburg

Two sides that are struggling to pick up a win will meet this coming weekend, and something will have to give. Schalke had hopes of finishing in the Europa League places at the beginning of the season, but their form over the past six games has meant that they have slid down to eighth in the league. The home side will need to pick up all three points to keep their chances alive. Otherwise, they could end the upcoming round of fixtures as low as ninth in the standings, and the gap between themselves and Wolfsburg could be too much to make up.

Augsburg have also struggled over their last six games, and defeat this weekend could see the gap between themselves and the relegation playoff spot bridged to just one point. Over their last six fixtures, they have lost five times and picked up just one point. Both sides come into this match having lost their last game, with Schalke being beaten heavily by Borussia Dortmund, while Augsburg suffered defeat against Wolfsburg.

Schalke have a dominant record over their opponents this weekend as they have won ten of their 18 fixtures. Gamblers will be betting on Schalke to get the win as Augsburg haven’t beaten them since 2015.

Mainz vs RB Leipzig

The other interesting fixture on Sunday will see Mainz hosting RB Leipzig. The travelling side have been in terrible form over recent weeks and could end up outside the Champions League placed after this round of fixtures. Their form since the winter break has meant that their title hopes have gone up in smoke, and this could be a potentially difficult game to get their season back on track. Leipzig haven’t won in their past three fixtures, as they have been held to draws in all those fixtures. Their last outing ended in a 1-1 draw against Freiburg, as they needed a late Yussef Poulsen goal to level the scores.

Mainz have been in decent form considering where they are in the league standings, and they have lost just once in their last six league games. They have managed to win the same amount of games as Leipzig over this period of time as they have won twice. Mainz have only been beaten once over the course of these six fixtures, but turning draws into wins has been their biggest problem. They are unbeaten in three and have drawn their last two games. The most recent of those came in the form of a 2-2 draw against Cologne.

Leipzig have enjoyed the better record over their opponents as they have won four of the seven fixtures. They also won the game earlier in the season 8-0, but this will be a much trickier task for them. It will be a close match, but Leipzig will grind out the win.
