The English Open gets underway in its rebranded form of the Cazoo Classic at the Hillside Golf Links. Once again, much of the conjecture surrounding the tour currently is based on the breakaway LV Golf Series but the Cazoo Classic promises to be an excellent weekend of golfing action. With the best part of 2 million euros in the prize pot, there is plenty to play for at Hillside and with past winners including the likes of Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood, and Colin Montgomerie – testament to the importance of the event on the European Tour.

The Hillside Golf Club is a real test on the Merseyside links, regardless of the weather and there could be plenty of big names in contention come Sunday:-
Emerging Scot Robert Macintyre has been producing some good showings of late and he is the headline name in this field in Southport.
Dane Thorbjorn Olesen is a high quality performer, and he has already won on the European Tour this season, making him a serious contender from the off.
South African Oliver Bekker has steadily climbed the rankings this season and looks to finally be fulfilling his seemingly endless potential and this is a field he could go well in.
Scot Richie Ramsay has had some near misses of late on the European Tour and as a player that has always enjoyed links golf, he should go very well here.
Talented Spaniard Adrian Otaegui has also picked up some good points and prize money on the European Tour this season and he has been showing winning form of late.
1st Round Finish
Getting off to a good start will be crucial for all concerned here at Hillside and there could be plenty of players in contention from the off:
Swede Alexander Bjork went well at the Open Championship last weekend and with links golf on the agenda again here, he should arrive full of confidence.
Enigmatic Italian Edoardo Molinari is very capable of shooting low rounds and conditions should suit his game here in Southport.
Top Ten Finish
With so many quality players assembled here at Hillside, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 10 come Sunday afternoon:-
Englishman Ross Fisher has battled with form in recent seasons, but his game is made for links golf and conditions should certainly suit.
Another Englishman who is prolific at this level is Jack Senior and his game should be an excellent match for the links conditions at the Hillside Golf Club.
Eddie Pepperell is a talented performer on the DP World Tour, but his results perhaps don’t reflect that and with some of the big hitters missing here in Southport, he could cash in.
