The final field for Africa’s Richest Race Day – the Sun Met Celebrated with Mumm – was announced on Monday, 14 January with 13 runners making the cut for the R5 million prize purse. While the numbers are small for the race day – taking place at Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday, 26 January – there is a great balance of the cards. South African champion trainer, Justin Snaith, is coming out strongest numerically with 4 of the 13 runners, and two of his runners are currently in our top 5 picks. Here’s the full list of horses to bet on at this year’s Sun Met.
Horse Race Betting: Sun Met
- Rainbow Bridge
Jockey: A Marcus
Trainer: Eric Sands
Odds: 3/1
Anton Marcus, a two-time Sun Met champion, will be riding the favourite at this year’s competition, despite initial speculation that Bernarnd Fayd’Herbe would be taking the reins. Marcus knows what it takes to win this course, having taken top position on Empress Club in 1993 and Hill Fifty-Four in 2014. His last three seasons have seen him taking second place twice and fourth position once, so it’s fair to say he’s on form. The horse of the hour, Rainbow Bridge, is also on winning streak, having ended 2018 with an unbeaten record, taking his fifth win at the Cape Mile at Kenilworth.
- Oh Susanna
Jockey: B Fayd’Herbe
Trainer: Justin Snaith
Odds: 6/1
The returning Sun Met champion, Oh Susanna is once again looking on top form and Bernard Fayd’Herbe will no doubt be looking forward to riding the 5-year-old mare to victory. If the pair are to take top place, this will be Fayd’Herbe’s fourth win at Kenilworth, having won on Futura in 2015, as well as Pocket Power in 2008 and 2009. Oh Susanna ended 2018 on a high note, after being named Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, Champion Middle Distance Horse and Horse Of The Year at the Equus Awards’ ceremony.
- Do it Again
Jockey: R Fourie
Trainer: Justin Snaith
Odds: 11/10
The reigning Durban July and L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner is definitely a contender for this year’s Sun Met grand prize. The four-year-old put on a splendid performance at L’Ormarins where he outpointed Soqrat, joining Trademark and Pocket Power as one of only three horses to achieve the Durban July-Queen’s Plate double this century. Jockey, Richard Fourie, has 12 years racing experience in the Cape and feels that Do It Again will live up to his name at this year’s Sun Met.
- Legal Eagle
Jockey: L Hewitson
Trainer: Sean Tarry
Odds: 14/1
This 8-year-old Greys Inn gelding was the 2016 and 2017 South African Horse of the Year and showed true championship style in taking the Green Point Stakes at Kenilworth for the third year in a row. The win is Legal Eagle’s 10th over 1600m, and 15th win overall, for stakes of over R11.5 million. Trainer, Sean Tarry, is insistent that Legal Eagle is not past his prime and remains in contention for his fourth attempt at the upcoming Sun Met, where he has previously placed in second position on two occasions and fourth once.
- Made to Conquer
Jockey: S Khumalo
Trainer: Justin Snaith
Odds: 16/1
Another of Snaith’s top contenders, Made to Conquer has been on the up since the winning debut, beating Silva’s Bullet at Scottsville. Having won the last three races, Made to Conquer is definitely worth considering for the Sun Met, particularly with 2013 Durban July winning jockey, S’manga Khumalo taking the reins.
