Golf: Nedbank Golf Challenge
Venue: Gary Player Country Club, Sun City, South Africa.
Dates: Thursday 10th – Sunday 13th November 2022
The European Tour rolls on to South Africa for one of the biggest events of the season, the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Having had many guises over the years, the Nedbank Golf Challenge remains one of the biggest events both on the DP World Tour and outside of the majors, having once been known as the Million Dollar Challenge. Previous winners of the competition include Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Jim Furyk, testament to the prestige of the tournament and with over $6 million in the prize pot, there is plenty on the line in Sun City.
There are plenty of big names descending on Sun City this week in what promises to be a hotly contested four days of golf in South Africa:-
2019 champion Tommy Fleetwood is not showing the best form of his career but when his game is on point, he is tough to stop, and conditions should suit here in Sun City.
Classy Englishman Jordan Smith won well at the Portugal Masters last time out and he looks set to be one of the front runners here in South Africa and conditions should certainly suit his game.
Belgian Thomas Detry is enjoying another excellent season on the DP World Tour and how he would love to cap it off with a win here in South Africa.
Kiwi Ryan Fox has already won one of the biggest events on the DP World Tour at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and how he would love a repeat showing here.
South African golf continues to grow and develop and in Branden Grace, the Proteas have one of the most exciting prospects around, making him a candidate for the win from the off in Sun City.
1st Round Leader
Producing the goods over 72 holes is often the most difficult thing for any golfer to do therefore here are our first round leader picks:-
Frenchman Victor Perez always looks to get off to a fast start in any event he plays, and he will be eager to lay down a marker from the outset this week.
Enigmatic Dane Thorbjorn Olesen hasn’t been in the best of nick throughout 2022 but there have been glimpses in recent weeks that he is returning to his best form.
Top Five Finish
With so many quality players assembled here in Sun City, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 5 come Sunday:-
Big Scot Robert Macintyre is a clean striker of the ball and despite no real form to speak of, he should be very much in the mix in an open South African field.
Fresh off his win in Mallorca last month, German Yannick Paul will be eager to put in another strong performance in similar conditions here in South Africa.
It has largely been a season to forget for Ross Fisher, but the Englishman hits the ball as cleanly as anybody on tour, making him an outside shot at the very least here in South Africa.
