New Zealand

New Zealand will go into this year’s Rugby Championship as favourites yet again. Since the start of the Rugby Championship, with the inclusion of Argentina in 2012, New Zealand has dominated the competition losing just 2 matches in their 33 starts and being crowned champions on 5 out of 6 occasions.

The recent tour of France to New Zealand ended in a clean sweep and series win for the All Blacks. Despite the 3 victories, France showed that with the right defense patterns and pressure, the All Blacks are beatable.

Prediction: Its hard not to see the All Blacks claiming another Rugby Championship title. There will be stronger challenges from South Africa and Australia but even a loss won’t stop them claiming there 6th Rugby Championship title. To finish in first place.

South Africa

The Springboks with new coach Rassie Erasumus, have shown some positive signs of improvements with a 2-1 series victory over England in June, but they will need to continue this cohesive playing style and show further progress if they wish to challenge for the title.

SOME BIG PLAYERS LIKE EBEN ETZEBETH AND WARREN WHITELEY ARE RETURNING FROM INJURIES SO MAY TAKE TIME TO GET UP TO SPEED.

The last time the Springboks lifted silverware was in 2009 when they won the Tri Nations. Since the inception of the Rugby Championship the Springboks have won just 14 of the 33 matches played.

Prediction: The Springboks will be far more competitive this year, to expect them to win the tournament is maybe a step too far, but if Rassie Erasmus can get his combination right the Springboks could be a formidable force, particularly at home. Boks to finish second.

Australia

The Wallabies have had a tough time in the recent past, which includes a recent home series loss to Ireland. Captain Hooper will need to lead his team as they look to claim the Bledisloe Cup for the first time since 2002.  Head coach Cheika has named a young squad with the aim of building a side to contest in the 2019 World Cup.

AUSTRALIA WILL BE BATTLE HARDENED FOLLOWING THE HIGHLY COMPETITVE TEST SERIES AGAINST IRELAND, WHILE DAVID POCOCK AND MICHAEL HOOPER ARE A TROUBLESOME PAIR AT THE BREAKDOWN.

Predictions: Despite lifting the Rugby Championship trophy in 2015 the wallabies have not had a good run in the Rugby Championship- winning just 15 of their 33 matches. Their recent series loss to Ireland showed their vulnerabilities. They will be competitive but ultimately will not challenge for the title. To finish Third.

Argentina has shown glimpses of brilliance over the years and with the inclusion of the Jaguares in Super Rugby much has been expected from them in the Rugby Championship. Unfortunately they have only won 3 matches since they joined Rugby Championship in 2012.

ARGENTINA CAN NOW SELECT OVERSEAS-BASED PLAYERS AGAIN, WHICH GIVES THEM MORE EXPERIENCE AND DEPTH.

Jaguares head coach Mario Ledesma has now taken over the national side and if he can bring some of the Jaguares  Super Rugby form into the tournament then the side will prove difficult to beat.

Predictions: With a new coach and some experienced players in the squad, the Pumas will be a side on the move, they will be extremely hard to beat at home and will more than likely win one or two matches this year. Despite this they will still finish bottom of the log.
