The penultimate playoff event of the FedEx Cup takes place this coming weekend, as the Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland hosts the BMW Championship. The biggest stars in the world of golf on the PGA Tour will be competing for their share of the $9.5 million purse available.
BMW Championship Event Details
The BMW Championship gets underway on Thursday, 26th August and the final round, and winner will be crowned on Sunday, 29th August at Caves Valley Golf Club. It is often one of the stand out events of the season, and has been named the tournament of the year by the PGA Tour on three occasions since 2012.
It is played over 6,607 metres, and has a par 71. The stroke play event attracts the biggest golf stars in the world, but which players are the ones to watch this weekend?
Players To Watch
Jon Rahm
It may be hard to avoid the world number one in the BetXchange betting markets for the BMW Championship. The Spanish star won this event in 2020, as he finished above Dustin Johnson after a playoff between the two players at Olympia Fields in Illinois.
Rahm’s form this season has been exceptional, as he won the first major of his career at the U.S. Open. In achieving that, he became the first Spanish player to win the major. He has also finished in the top ten of all four major events this season.
Dustin Johnson
It would be hard to rule out Dustin Johnson for the BMW Championship this weekend, as the American has been excellent throughout the history of the event. The 37-year-old has won the event on two previous occasions, with his last victory coming in 2017.
On that occasion, he beat Paul Casey by three strokes. He also finished as the runner-up in the event 12 months ago behind Rahm. The Masters Champion from last year will be looking for a 25th PGA Tour success this weekend, after winning the Travelers Championship, The Northern Trust and Tour Championship last year.
Cameron Smith
Australian players have performed well in the BMW Championship throughout its history, with two winning Aussies since 2015. Cameron Smith could be best placed to continue that record, as he comes into the event this weekend after an impressive showing at The Northern Trust.
He is currently at the top of the leaderboard for that event, ahead of its Monday finish, with him and Rahm looking for the victory. Smith won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans earlier in the season, and could be a standout player for a strong finish in the BMW Championship based on recent form.
BMW Championship Prediction
It looks set to be an exciting weekend of action in Maryland, and cases can be made for a number of the players at the top of the betting. However, we believe that Rahm is the standout player coming into the event, and could be eyeing back-to-back wins depending on how he finishes in the Northern Trust. He will also be looking for a second win in the BMW Championship after winning in Illinois last year.
Pick: Jon Rahm with BetXchange.
