Sterne, who turned pro in 2001 and won his first European Tour Title in 2004 at the Open de Madrid is often compared to South African golfing legend Gary Player whom he also draws much inspiration from.
Sterne reached his career high in 2008 when he was placed as number 29 in the Official World Golf Rankings. After being plagued with back injuries for a few years, he came back strong as ever in 2013 to win the Joburg Open by 7 strokes, beating Charl Schwartzel. 2013 was a good year as he finished second at the Alstom Open de France, ninth at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, 13th at the Omega European Masters, and 14th at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai. These results allowed Sterne to be eighth in the Race to Dubai final standings. 2014 was also a strong year for Sterne as he finished fourth at the WGC-Cadillac Championship, 17th at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and 35th at the PGA Championship. He qualified to the Web.com Tour Finals, where he ended second at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship. He finished ninth in the Web.com Tour Finals to earn his PGA Tour card for the 2014–15 season.
