West Ham and Chelsea open the EPL round 2 this Friday night. You probably all remember those hooligan movies, where fans of these two teams take on the leading roles. That’s how big this rivalry is.

The history spans over 100 years, and throughout that time, we’ve witnessed numerous epic moments. Let’s hope Friday’s match adds more chapters to that book.

Why is this game so important? Well, apart from bragging rights, there’s a matter of early-season momentum, which can define the whole campaign. On the other hand, since both teams failed to win in the opening round, another triumphless game would be a huge bust.

West Ham vs. Chelsea Preview

West Ham

The Hammers suffered a KO against Sunderland on the road. The newly promoted Black Cats have managed to dismantle the London team, beating them 3-0. It was a hard kick in the teeth for Graham Potter and his unit, who definitely didn’t open the championship as planned.

To be honest, following solid preseason results, this came as a huge surprise. Though, we need to say that even though Hammers posted three wins before the trip to Sunderland, they weren’t considered favorites against Sunderland. Mohammed Kudus’ departure left a hole in the midfield.

Chelsea

After winning the FIFA Club World Cup and beating both Bayern Munich and AC Milan in the preseason, everyone expected to see the Blues easily beating Crystal Palace. However, the Eagles presented a tough challenge for Chelsea once again, leaving Stamford with one point in their pockets.

Chelsea did create a few chances, though, not too many, and neither of them was, let’s say, a golden one. There were solid attempts, but overall, Maresca’s boys failed to meet the fans’ expectations. But to be honest, Chelsea’s form will suffer because of the FIFA World Cup. This team didn’t have proper rest, nor proper preseason, and it’s normal to see them go up and down.

If it’s of any consolation, the Blues’ unbeaten streak extended to 8, this being the first tie after seven wins. Also, in four of the past five games Chelsea played, its net remained intact. That’s the Maresca effect, which appeared at the end of the previous season when this team showed its defensive prowess.

West Ham vs. Chelsea Head to Head

Last year, Chelsea won both matches. The first was at the London Stadium, 0-3 and the second at home, 2-1. Over the past 10 events, the Blues posted 7 triumphs, West Ham two, and there was one tie.

When we look only at the matches played in front of the Hammers’ fans, over the previous 5, both teams have posted two victories, with one tie.

West Ham vs. Chelsea Predictions

We are wondering in which state Chelsea is currently, because of its summer campaign. The fatigue is bound to hit; the question is only whether that happens sooner or later.

However, despite that, we really believe that the Blues should win this event. They are a better team than West Ham, who still lack a replacement for Kudus, and that’s something that will haunt them throughout the entire season.

Chelsea plays more easily against teams that want to attack and open a bit, and that’s West Ham at home. Therefore, we have to pick the guests. Odds are just fine if you ask us, so definitely try this bet.

Pick: Chelsea wins
