England – 1.00

India – 0.80

After back-to-back defeats, England’s Cricket World Cup hopes are on the edge of disaster. Having said that, their fate is still in their hands and a clear path into the semi-finals of the competition remains for the hosts.

England currently sit fourth in the table after seven games with four wins and three defeats. Their remaining two matches are against second-placed India and third placed New Zealand, with the likes of Bangladesh and Pakistan still in position to strike and steal the last semi-final spot if England fails to win either of its last two games.

The fact that the hosts are even in this position given their dominant form leading into the tournament is a surprise. Their poor form with the bat against Sri Lanka and Australia really let them down over the last two games and that is the main reason they are in this spot.

India, on the other hand, are sitting pretty at this point. They have 11 points after just six matches and they are undefeated with five wins and one draw. A win here would see them take top spot over Australia and their remaining games against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka both seem winnable. This is a team that can not only win this match, but they could win the whole tournament.

Match Preview

England have reached a do or die situation in this World Cup about 10 days before they expected to be there. The remit is simple at this point, win four games in a row and you win the biggest trophy in the game.

Their injury news is positive, with England looking to return the much missed Jason Roy to the batting order after his hamstring issue. Adil Rashid should also be good to go, while the status of Jofra Archer is a little more up in the air.

India would be in a much better spot is Shikhar Dhawan was fit and available for selection. He was ruled out of the competition after breaking a bone in his hand, and without his battling power and skill India are not the same team. They have less power at the top of the order and their middle order has holes despite a reshuffle. Having said all that, this is an unbeaten team and they will feel they have the squad to beat England.

Betting Tips

England Top Batsman – Joe Root 2.75

Roy coming back into the lineup is important for all the players in the top half of the England order. One such player is Root, who has hardly put a foot wrong when England have notched big innings this tournament. The Sheffield-born batsman will come in at No. 3 and he has 432 runs so far to lead England in the Cricket World Cup. Expect a massive slog from him here with England’s progress on the line.

India Top Bowler – Mohammed Shami 4.00

Shami is one of the outsiders when it comes to top bowler for India, which doesn’t make much sense considering he has seven wickets over his last two games. He was mesmeric at times against West Indies, where he took four wickets, and the seam bowler is one of many at his craft who have found the ball moving well in the English summer conditions.

Match Prediction

There are reasons to pick India here. The crowd will make Birmingham feel like Mumbai as the Indian faithful show up in numbers to support their team. India will also know a win likely eliminates England and they will want to avoid helping the hosts get into the semi-finals. England, though, will welcome back Roy and his 215 runs in three overs so far this tournament. India are also on short rest, with teams playing after just two days off winning just 7 of 17 games and proving vulnerable to an upset.

England at 1.00 is the pick on BetXChange.
