Turkish Grand Prix will no doubt be one of the most interesting this year. With all the rain problems and confusion during the qualifiers, the race itself promises a lot of fun. It seems that unlike all the previous events in which more/less we had repeatable scenarios and outcomes, this one will be chaotic. And that is what fans crave to see. With all due respect to Lewis Hamilton, who is superb, we are a bit bored from all his wins. Preview
Both Hamilton and his teammate from Mercedes, Valtteri Bottas, will start from way lower positions than they got used to. Lewis was sixth after the qualifiers ended, and Bottas three places lower. Truly, not a common thing to see over the past few years.
Hamilton was struggling with pace during the entire time, and once again, the champ proved that he simply isn’t near the level of his usual drive when encountering rain at the track. In fact, that is why many don’t accept him as the GOAT, due to his mixed results in these circumstances, which were, by the way, much improved since the introduction of electronics to the F1. At one moment, he was near the elimination but managed to progress to the final stage of the qualifiers.
Racin Point will celebrate this date, that is sure. Lance Stroll won the pole position, while Sergio Perez ended third. It is, without a doubt, the most glorious day ever for Racing Point. The Canadian driver was first with 1:47.765, snapping Mercedes’ duo from reaching the pole for the first time this season. And that is quite refreshing.
Stroll was ahead of Max Verstappen, who was fabulous throughout the entire training sessions and qualifiers, and is bidding to win the GP trophy in Istanbul. Verstappen’s second place might be disappointing for him after showing excellent pace, but it presents a very good foundation for tomorrow’s race. Replacing tires in the pit lane was a bad idea for the Dutchman as new ones couldn’t heat up very well, and his massive swing was lost in the final phase of Q3.
Red Bull’s second driver, Alexander Albon, was fourth, and he will have to watch out for Daniel Ricciardo in Renault, and Hamilton who are behind. Esteban Ocon was seventh, and the former world champion, Kimi Raikkonen in Alfa Romeo eight. Bottas as previously said, ended ninth, with the second Alfa Romeo, closing the list, and Antonio Giovinazzi.
Previous Races
After a nine-year pause, we again have an F1 in Turkey. COVID-19 pandemics has caused many changes this season, and one of them is Istanbul Park’s comeback.
In seven previous editions, Felipe Massa from Ferrari posted three wins, while Jenson Button, Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton, and Sebastian Vettel have one each. The last winner here is Vettel.
Prediction
We are backing up Max Verstappen to win here. In the paragraphs above, we already stated that he looked excellent, with that unlucky turn of events with tire chance deciding today’s qualifiers. Nevertheless, if everything goes well during the start, and there isn’t some big incident that would include Max, Stroll’s chances of resisting the Dutchman’s pressure are pretty slim. First of all, Red Bull has a better vehicle than Racing Point, and secondly, Max is a better driver, with all due respect towards the Canadian.
