Spanish Grand Prix History & Past Winners
The Spanish Grand Prix is one of the most illustrious races on the MotoGP calendar, as it has been a common race that drivers have looked to win since 1950. It has moved around Spain throughout its history, but the Circuito de Jerez has played host to the event since 1989. Prior to that date, it had only been hosted at the circuit on one occasion in 1987. Other tracks to have hosted the Spanish Grand Prix include the Circuito del Jarama and the Montjuic Circuit. There have been a number of drivers that have managed to achieve multiple successes in this race. Angel Nieto is the most successful driver in the history of the event, as he won on eleven occasions.
However, the most successful MotoGP driver is Valentino Rossi, who won for the ninth time in the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix. Marc Marquez has been the dominant driver in recent history, as he has won three times since 2014. His most recent win came in 2019. Fabio Quartararo is the reigning MotoGP champion of the Spanish Grand Prix coming into this weekend, as he won the race in 2020. The Frenchman is currently the second favourite to win the Drivers’ Championship with BetXChange this season.
Spanish Grand Prix Leading Contenders
Fabio Quartararo will be one of the drivers that will be attracting the most interest for the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, as he has won two of the previous three races this season. His two victories have come in the Doha Grand Prix and the Portuguese Grand Prix. The only race that he hasn’t won this season came in the Doha Grand Prix, where he still finished in a respectable fifth. The Frenchman’s success in the race last season makes him a leading contender, and it looks difficult to bet against him repeating the feat.
Maverick Vinales could be the other driver worth consideration in the race this weekend, as the Spanish driver was dominant when winning in Qatar. He won the race, and claimed the fastest lap during the success. Since that victory, he finished fifth in Doha, and eleventh in Portugal. But, he will have a lot of support this weekend, as he will have home advantage at the Circuito de Jerez.
Spanish Grand Prix Prediction
It looks incredibly hard to look past the reigning champion of the Spanish Grand Prix, as he looks to extend his lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship. The fact that he won the race last year is hard to look past, as he has the experience of winning this race. However, Francesco Bagnaia could be an outside chance, as he has achieved a podium finish in two of the three races so far this season.
