The final game of the World Cup group stages between Australia and South Africa hasn’t turned out to be the must win contest many purists had hoped. Australia have looked imperious throughout their campaign so far, making light work of England and New Zealand with their only defeat coming in a high scoring contest against India. Aaron Finch’s side have booked their passage to the knockout stages and they kill be keen to continue their momentum here. By contrast, South Africa have been eliminated from the competition and their performances have heaped pressure on their captain Faf du Plessis. They have only managed two wins from their 8 games played but the manner of their win over Sri Lanka last time out should fill them with confidence heading into this one and they will want to finish on a high.
Match Preview
South Africa have struggled to impose themselves on the opposition throughout this World Cup and at times, their brand of cricket has looked dated at times in comparison to that of some of the teams at the top of the table. Experienced pairing Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis endured tough starts to their respective World Cup campaigns but they have looked in good nick recently. The bowling department has been surprisingly lacking in potency so far at this World Cup but the introduction of Dwaine Pretorius in the last game against Sri Lanka paid instant dividends. Whilst this is a dead rubber for the Proteas, they will be keen to give their supporters something to cheer about here.
Australia have been arguably the most consistent side on display at the World Cup so far with the likes of Aaron Finch and David Warner consistently piling on the runs at the top of the order. Whilst Mitchell Starc and Jason Behrendorff have bowled with pace and aggression that has unsettled opposition batsmen, giving the team an excellent balance. There is no love lost between Australia and South Africa, particularly in World Cup cricket and the Aussies will be keen to ensure they top the table at the end of the group stages as the semi-finals loom.
