The second of the four majors will get underway at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, in Southampton, New York from 11 to 17 June. The 118th US Open Championship has received more than 9 000 entries for the 156 spots that will be filled. This extraordinary number showcases that calibre of one of golf’s greatest tests and this year looks to be a really hard-fought contest. Here are some more notable golfing predictions.

US Open Golf Predictions

1. Jordan Spieth

In the past five Masters, American sweetheart Jordan Spieth has had four top-three finishes including a 2015 win. Spieth is an incredibly balanced 24-year-old golfer, and there’s no doubt there will be another Master’s win in his future. The bookmakers are definitely tipping the odds in favour of this three-time golfing major’s winner, so it’s worth keeping an eye on Spieth come June.

2. Tiger Woods

Winner of 14 majors and a three-time US Open winner, Tiger Woods has confirmed he will be returning to Shinnecock Hills for the first time since 2004. The once-great Woods, who has been seeking a return to his former glory days, just fired a third-round 65 at The Players’ Championship – a career-low score for Woods at TPC Sawgrass’ Stadium Course. The 42-year-old American missed the cut in the last US Open at Chambers Bay in 2015 but, in his last six games, he has finished within the top 25 four times, and his most recent performance is definitely promising.

3. Patrick Reed

Fellow American and World No.24, Reed just claimed his first-ever major title with a one-shot win at the Masters in Augusta. The 27-year-old is a talented, cheeky golfer who might not be winning any popularity tests with fellow golfers, but he’s a strong player with a determined mind. His recent Masters win has pushed him up to No. 11 in the world rankings and saw him take home a cheque of 1.98 million American dollars, so he’s certainly riding a good wave going into the US Open.

4. Dustin Johnson

Winner of the 2016 US Open and World No. 1, Dustin Johnson is a good bet for the 2018 title. As of April 16 2018, Johnson has retained his world ranking for 61 consecutive weeks, the 5th longest streak in PGA Tour history. He also boasts five World Golf Championship victories. He’s getting over last year’s setback, an injury following a fall down some stairs at his rental home just the night before the US Masters, so hopefully the 33-year-old American will get to don the green jacket again in June.

Current betting odds: 19/2

5. Rory McIlroy

The 28-year-old Northern Irishman is playing some of the best golf of his life and keen to take the US Open title again – having won it back in 2011 when he set the tournament record score of -16. He is a four-time majors’ champion and, along with Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth, is one of four players to win three majors by age 25. He put himself in contention for a fifth major title at this year’s Masters, going into the final day three shots behind the eventual winner, Patrick Reed. Shooting a 74, McIlroy tied for fifth place, but he will be looking to improve on this at the US Open.
