The European clay court swing of the WTA Tour is very much upon us and all of the best players in the world will be jostling for position ahead of the French Open next month here at the WTA Porsche Grand Prix. Former world number one Ashleigh Barty’s retirement from the game has sent shockwaves through the world of women’s tennis and beyond but there will be a whole host of players looking to pick up the pieces here in Germany. In what promises to be an open draw, it should be a fascinating week of tennis in Stuttgart, with nearly $1 million in the prize pot.

With some of the best players in the world in action, it promises to be a week of high-quality tennis at Stuttgart.

Here are some our tips for the title in Germany this week:

Iga Swiatek – 5/4 – Young Polish superstar Iga Swiatek has kicked on since winning her maiden Grand Slam at the French Open in 2020 and is now the undisputed number one player in the world. She stormed to victory in Miami and at Indian Wells and with her past performances on clay, she is the person to beat this week.

Paola Badosa – 6/1 – Spaniard Paola Badosa is operating at her highest ever world ranking, and she has emerged as one of the key contenders in every WTA Tour event she plays. Clay courts will certainly suit her game and with a potentially decent draw from third seed this week, she sneak under the radar somewhat.

Maria Sakkari – 15/2 – Greek superstar Maria Sakkari is seeded 4h at this event in California and should come into the tournament refreshed. Her game is made for clay court tennis, and she has come on leaps and bounds at this level in 2021 and should she pick up some solid opening round wins, she could be difficult to stop.

Aryna Sabalenka – 7/1 World number five Aryna Sabalenka is the one of the highest ranked players in the draw and she will be looking to find some form ahead of the French Open. Sabalenka hasn’t been in the best of form of late, but she could enjoy playing without pressure in Stuttgart this week.

Anett Kontaveit – 9/1 – Estonian Anett Kontaveit has progressed exponentially over the past few seasons, and she is now banging on the door of the top 5 in the world. She was undone by Iga Swiatek in the final of the Qatar Open last month, and she will be doing all she can to kick on here in Germany this week.

Cori Gauff – 16/1 – It is hard to believe that teen sensation Cori Gauff is still only 18 years of age and her place at the top of the game looks guaranteed moving forward. Each event she plays is a relative stepping stone in her career and cutting her teeth on the European clay here in Germany could give her a good chance to put ranking points on the board.

Petra Kvitova – 20/1 – Two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova continues to battle away on the cusp of the world’s top 20 and she will be doing all she can to fight her way back into the top 10. Clay court tennis has never been her strongest suit, but she is very capable in a field as open as this, and she could sneak under the radar.
