In a stunning turn of events, it appears that Manchester United might be another step closer to solving their problems in central defense.

According to new reports, the Red Devils are the only club to have submitted an offer to Ajax in regards to their captain and Dutch international defender Matthijs de Ligt.

While United were initially linked heavily with the defender after he shone during Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals, their chances had appeared to be fading of late. PSG and Barcelona were thought to be in the frame, but it was Juventus who had emerged as the clear favourites for his signature.

The only problem here is that it is unknown if de Ligt would even be interested in a move to Old Trafford given that United will be playing only Europa League football next season.

It does appear that United are going to be every bit as mobile in the transfer market as expected, with this news about de Ligt following the arrival of Aaron Wan-Bissaka earlier this week.

United are expected to be in a battle with Chelsea for the last Champions League qualification spot this season. They are 0.95  fourth favourites for a Top 4 spot with the Blues, but their odds are shortening all the time.
